About New Chancellor

The beginning of the
Wednesday, October 30“',
SGA meeting was used as a
special open-mike forum for
students. The purpose was
to give the students a chance
to voice their suggestions on
the characteristics they
would like the new Chan
cellor of Fayetteville State
University to have.
Chancellor Willis B.
McLeod stated on July P‘,
that he would resign as
chancellor. The resignation
will go into effect July 1,
2003.
A 17-member search
committee has since been
assigned to fmd a replace
ment for McLeod. The
chancellor search commit
tee will host several forums
that seek suggestions from
students, alumni, faculty,
staff, and community
citizens. The firm of
Heidrick & Struggles of
Atlanta will assist in the
search for the new chancel
lor.
Nathan Garrett, Chair
man of the University’s
Chancellor Search Com
mittee and a member of the
Board of Trustees, was
present at the forum to
receive comments and
answer students’ questions.
He began by saying, “We
cannot do our job, which is
to select a new chancellor,
if we don’t get the students’
input.”
Garrett informed stu
dents that the chancellor
search committee would
review all applicants and
narrow them down to five.
The board of trustees will
then choose three from the
five to present to Molly
Broad, President of the
UNC System. She will
select a finalist for the UNC
Board of Governors.
Garrett stated that the
search for the new chancel
lor should not slow down
the school’s building
process and renovations.
“McLeod is willing to stay
on longer if needed,” he
said. “We will not be
constrained by a certain
date. We must fmd the
proper candidate.”
Latanza McCoy, Presi
dent of New Residence
Broncos ’ Teams Ready
For CIAA Weekend
Hall, was first to give
suggestions. She said that
after surveying several of
the freshman students, many
felt as though they did not
know the chancellor. “We
want a chancellor who’s
visible and approachable.”
Victor Landry, SGA
Chief of Staff, wanted to
know what types of qualifi
cations Garrett was inquir
ing from the students.
Garrett explained that
different schools have
different priorities and that
the students at FSU must
decide what was most
important for the school.
Once that is done FSU
could better decide what the
best traits for the new
chancellor are.
Senator Guandi Allen
asked Garrett what qualifi
cations were already in the
minds of the search commit
tee.
Garrett said the search
committee had not yet put
together a list of attributes
as they were currently still
meeting with different
groups of interest. “We will
make sure that the voice of
