FSU’s Cheer Phi Smoov More Than Pretty Faces By Garrett N. James Editor-In-Chief It’s Saturday afternoon. The football team is fired up. The stands are crowded with students chanting “Bronco Pride.” Behind every great athlete there is a motivator- someone to uplift his/her spirit and boost self-esteem. The FSU football team is more than fortunate to have the astonishing ladies and gentlemen of‘Cheer Phi Smoov’ as their motivators. They are not only beauti ful, but they are also “oh, so talented!” Day in and day out these ladies tumble and hustle to prepare for another amazing performance. Though worn out from vigorous practices, they somehow find the energy to come out and enlighten the crowd once again each Saturday. Walking and talking in unison, with heads high and pom-pons in hand, they make this demanding sport look so easy. We have yet to figure out just how they do it. Several cheerleaders say they just love the hassle. They enjoy what they do to the fullest and wouldn’t trade it in for the world. It is not only the ladies who are making this squad so successftil. Cheer Phi Smoov has four dedicated and hardworking male cheerleaders helping them to spread the joyous spirit. These young men seem to be perfect gentlemen and their athletic ability is simply outstanding. According to the Cheerleading Head Coach, Lawanda Miller, they have great ideas and are strong supporters of the team. She also mentions that they are indeed some of the most dedicated male cheerlead ers she has ever had. Speaking of the coach, Ms. Lawanda Miller is another essential key to the squad’s success. A well functioning group such as Cheer Phi Smoov must have a solid backbone. Ms. Miller has served as the backbone of this team for a about three years. Within this time, she has had the opportunity to work with several different people. She admits that the biggest reward of coaching is being an alumna and being able to give back to the school while promoting a positive image. Although she loves each of her cheerleaders, she says that she especially enjoys the freshmen. When asked how she feels about her squad this year, she stated, “They have a lot of talent and stunt ability. They may not be exactly where they need to be as far as the CIAA style of cheering, but they are progressing.” She looks for showman ship and rhythm in a cheer leader. She also seeks overall appearance, fitness, and proper techniques. A team is only as strong as its leader and therefore Louisa “Tori” Murphy (captain) and Erica Andrews (co captain) are doing their best to make this a successful and pleasant season. Who says that work has to end at cheering? When these dedicated divas are not strutting their stuff, they are out in the community. They spend time helping out an elderly group of ladies and they even work with children at the local Boys and Girls Club. It is no secret that being a cheerleader is no easy job. It takes attitude and ability. It takes brains and beauty. Most of all, it takes dedication and determina tion. In the words of Lawanda Miller, “They just have to love what they do and love it first.” There you have it. The essence of Cheer Phi Smoov is officially a continuing legacy. 1.
