2 COMMENTARY
Senior Looking Forward
To May 2003 Graduation
At Sharpton wants to be president
Is Sharpton Qualified
For Presidency?

This is strictly for the
SENIORS.
Was it me, or was
December’s graduation
more emotional than most
others? Although I arrived
late and was forced to stand
the entire time - as did
several other hundred
people - I caught enough to
have my insides more
messed up than Bobby
Brown’s career. Well maybe
not that bad, but anyway.
I suspect that seeing
friends graduate who sat
across from me in class and
who helped me study the
night before exam days
touched a special spot in
me.
If you promise not to
tell, I may have even shed a
tear or two.
We had all been hearing
about “G-Day” for an
entire semester from our
friends. However, the
realization that they would
not be back in three weeks
to start the spring semester
hit hard.
Who’s gonna help me
sneak into the cafe while
Momma’s not looking?
Who’s gonna help me
video tape the campus
functions, post flyers, clean
the car, and give that wake
up call when the clock
fails? Who I say, who?
There I was surrounded
by hundreds of people. Was
I the only one that was
going to miss someone?
The guy beside me
commented on how
everyone says that they’re
gonna keep in touch, but
you never hear from them
unless they come to another
graduation, homecoming,
or the Lord blesses you to
stumble upon them in life.
His words fell upon deaf
ears.
Aside from my
selfishness of not wanting
my friends to leave me,
there’s another reason
December’s graduation
meant a bit more to me. It
said loud and clear,
“YOU’RE NEXT!”
Could it be true? As our
SGA President, Deon
Winchester says, “True
indeed.”
There’s only five months
left in my undergrad career.
Will I stay and work in
town or venture to a
foreign place? Is graduate
school in my future? Part-
time or full? Decisions,
decisions, decisions.
Fortunately, as the class
of 2003 will be one of the
largest groups of graduates
in our school’s history,
there are plenty of seniors
looking toward May just as
I am.
That means that I have
more tears to shed, but also
that I’m not alone in my
preparations for the real
world. I’m not the only one
thinking about those
monsters named GRE,
GMAT, LSAT, etc.
Hopefully, other seniors will
have better answers to these
questions than I.
Oh one last thing, for
any senior that is the head
or president of an
organization, make sure
that you are training
students to take over when
you’re gone. If your club
fails next year, you will be
the blame. It is your
responsibility to be
accountable for the
organization’s future and
insure that the proper
individuals are trained and
ready for the calling. That’s
just Bronco way of life.
The Rev. A1 Sharpton
has announced his
candidacy for President of
the United States, and it
looks as if there will be —
finally — someone with
national name recognition
who can properly represent
the Democratic Party
without having to resort to
political spin and linguistic
nuances.
A1 has championed the
causes nearest and dearest
to Democrats. He has
recently served jail time to
protest American military
training activities, showing
that he is a man of principle.
He brings no questions
of character with him, since
his character is well known,
and his past actions and
statements are the
foundation of his present
acceptance and prominence
in Democratic circles. He
proudly appears with
former President Clinton as
often as possible in Harlem
and elsewhere, and he is a
man who cannot be
attacked by other
Democrats who may also be
interested in the party’s
2004 nomination. Party
leaders can be certain that
he will pick up at least as
many votes from the black
community as the other A1
did in 2000.
Rev. A1 Sharpton, in
short, is simply the best and
the brightest standard-
bearer for the Democrats.
His views on virtually every
issue clearly coincide with
the liberal base, and none of
the present Democratic
leadership will dare
challenge his integrity or his
worthiness for the
Presidency without
reminding their core
constituencies of the
unremitting battle that Rev.
A1 has waged against the
white, heterosexual male
hegemony of America.
To further strengthen his
candidacy. Rev. A1 will need
an equally-unassailable
running mate, one whose
views are compatible with
his. He needs someone who
is not quite as flamboyant
and articulate, but just as
qualified as he has proven
himself to be. Rep. Maxine
Waters (D.- Calif) may be
poised and ready to take on
this challenge.
Do we dare to hope for
the poetic justice of a
Sharpton-Waters
candidacy?
