Bryan is the first African American woman appointed as head of a University of North Carolina Institution. By: Chikarra Bames Chancellor T.J. Bryan walks into her office after a meeting. We sit in her office decorated in Bronco paraphernalia, and she begins telling me about the growth and greatness she sees for the future of Fayetteville State University. There are many upcoming improvements such as developing programs to prepare students for the 21st century work place, by stressing the importance of technology with the addition of “smart learning technology” in the classrooms. New programs of study are being added such as a Forensic science, biotechnology and management information systems. Some programs that are being looked into “adoption” are a B,A. in Social Work, and a Masters in International Studies as well as Criminal Justice. Dr Bryan believes that the most important improvement is communication with the student body. Dr Bryan told me she receives many e- mails ft-om students’ everyday about problems they have encountered on campus. In one such e-mail she responded to the smdents’ problem and received an e-mail back from the student stating that he did not expect a response. Dr Bryan said “that’s why it was important for me to respond because it’s not expected.” Problems that are e- mailed to Dr Bryan are taken up with that particular department and addressed. Surveys are online to get student feedback to make positive changes here at Fayetteville State University According to Dr Bryan, “retention at Fayetteville State University is at its highest in ten years.” More students are staying here at FSU and graduating with four-year degrees. The increase in online classes as well as offering courses in remote locations such as Fort Bragg is also caused by the growth at Fayetteville State. The increase in the freshmen class was expected, but the increase in transfer students and those taking online courses was an unexpected surprise for the Chancellor Another factor in the retention of students and to interested students was the reminders Bryan sent over the summer A mouse pad was sent to upperclassmen and book bags were sent to incoming freshmen. This was done by the Chancellor “to just let them know they weren’t forgotten.” A big problem for many students was the change to the book rental policy. In fall of 2003, the Faculty Senate decided to end the book rental system. Dr Bryan adopted a system that would be beneficial to both sides by giving a year and a half notice of the change so students would be prepared. FSU will be providing students with ways to receive books such as the “book grants, ’ and vouchers. They are also placing three copies of each book in the library for students’ use. Dr Bryan says that after being at FSU for almost three years, she has been what she expected when she took the job. Dr Bryan says, “The students are good people and they make me proud. ’ Being Chancellor here at Fayetteville State University to Dr Bryan is “not a job, but a joy.” She says that no matter where you go, there will be positives and negatives, but the Chancellor quotes her son by saying “it’s all good.” What’s on Your Mind?
