Pg-4 Commentary SPRING SEMESTER Febuary 2006 Wake up Broncos Wake Kou "Nicole" Sunwabe The Voice WAKE irpBRONCOS... W\KEUP!! I know, I know we are all tired of losing basketball games, but come on lets be for real. We need to support our boys. The audience needs to cheer (while we’re winning or losing), hold up signs, and scream out names. We need to do anything to show support. If we don’t do any of these things, how we expect for them to win. Let’s be serious, everyone loves and needs a little support to get their game nght. So WAKE UP BRONCOS... WAKE UP!! WAK.E UP FRIENDS... WV\.KE UP!! You want to know why every time you see the dude your friend is suppose to be talking to (she can’t stop talking about him), but he is always in another female’s face; and he gives you that “nah it ain’t even like thaf ’ look? Well guess what “FRIEND,” wake up!! Be a tme friend and tell ya gjrl she needs to check him to see what’s really going on, or to move on because men are like buses; a new one comes every ten minutes. I mean really, we’re all still very young, and we have time to find someone else. Besides, two can play that game!!! So be a friend and.... WAKE UP FRIENDS... WAKE UP!! WAKE UP ATHLETES,.. WAKE UP!! Okay my athletes. I’m going to start off like this: do you reaUy want to know if that chick Hkes you, or if it is just your athletic publicity? What I am about to tell you will cause you to WAKE UP!! If she didn’t speak to you, nor even looked your direction football season, but now all of a sudden she wants to call or come see you... WAKE UP BOYS... WAKE UP!! I’m going to waste a lil’ cold water on your face, that’s because it’s basketball season and you my dude are in season. And let’s be for real, your last name is on the back of your jersey now... come on it gets no more professional than that when you are inanHBCUDl So... WAKE UP SON... WAKE UP! She doesn’t really want you, she wants your shine; and it’s only room for Broncos starting five on your court. WAKE UP NEW CLASS,., WAKE UP!! To all of my freshmen or transfers, whatever your case may be; if you left home a high school sweet heart or a significant other, I’m going to tell you like this cause I’ve been there: “Don’t leave the one you love for the one you like because eventually, the one you like will leave you for the one they love,” and you’ll be sitting around wondering what you did wrong. I mean yes it feels good to be new and seeing new faces, and even getting a lot of attention. But baby remember, you came in with a group of other people who are getting the same attention from the same people. Since I don’t know what the liiture holds. I’ll just say you should just go with your heart not your body or someone else’s because in reality, that person has a gjrl already and wants some.. .“you already know.” Listen to me: if it is meant to be it’ll be, but please don’t cheat cause we all know karma is a B!!! SO WAKE UP Y’ALL... WAKE UP!! W'AKEUP-FORCtETTHAT... GROW UP!! This is for all the people on this campus, who don’t like someone because your friend doesn’t like them, or just cause you simply don’t know them. I’m going to tell you straight like this: if you walk around with a mean mug on your face and your nose in the air like something stinks, than baby you need to get real because that person doesn’t care if you like them or not They are not here at FSU majoring in you and vice versa. All you’re doing every time you whisper about them or roll your eyes is motivating them and boosting up their confidence because you’re paying 8 to 12,000 dollars to look at them everyday. So just u p to get your monies worth next time, try and say “Hi.” Because guess what, at the end of the day, what you eat really doesn’t make them, umm... “you already know.” SO GROW UP... COME ON LET’S GROW UP!! And when you go to sleep tonight and think about what I’m saying, make sure you put a smile on your face tomorrow and enjoy your day. Hoffa at ya girl! Where’s the Love? Tiauna Walker The Voice Two weeks after his moving and to some controversial speech, Julian Bond is still receiving negative criticism from the media. According to the Fayetteville Observer Bond is "a verbal bomb-thrower, a strong voiced, pugnacious advocate for his position, and that of the organization he heads" Personally, I feel that all this negativity is truly unnecessary. Being a freshman myself, it was mandatory that I attended Mr. Bond's speech. I found it to be very inspiriting and thought provoking. Not only did Mr. Bond's words of knowledge stir emotions in the adult audience, it also enlightened the minds of the freshmen that attended. "I thought the speech was excellent. He kept is real, very blunt, and to the point. There was no sugar coating just straight to the point." Lisa Mickle commented. Takisha Beimett said " I think he did good. Bush is sorry and I agree with everything he (Bond) said." I myself am very pleased that the administrators made it mandatory for freshmen to attend. The reason I feel Mr. Bond has received so many negative comments sounds very clique-his race. Yes, Mr. Bond was very blunt but to follow Ln his footsteps I feel that if he was a White man there would not be as much criticism from the media. Mr. Bond's speech was his thinking but at the same time many Afhcan Americans feel the same about some of the issues he discussed. What makes it so controversial is the fact that he had a microphone to his mouth and was being recorded and broadcasted. The Observer states that "it hopes that we (FSU students) learned that fiery rhetoric doesn't create a movement with sweeping success." This lesson I feel isn't the true lesson, instead I feel that the lesson that should be taken from the speech is- if you want change, express yourself in the right manner. HOME SWEET PRISON Honors Hall - Maximum Security Facility Submitted Anonymously (whatever those are). Upon acting like this, came privileges. My parents trust me and therefore, with them I have a lot of freedom. I am a sophomore living in Hackley Honors Dorm. Wait, scratch that. I’ve actually just moved home... therefore, I am an 18 year old sophomore who is a former resident of Hackley Honors Dorm and I’ve moved back home for the first time in nearly 2 years. What could possibly drive a person to do that? t i j J Freedom, V^ ^ad Wanted to gO to A, home, I Yes, that’s nght. I have prisOYl, I WOUld hdVC don’t have to live with more freedom living . . „ bars on my window under my parents’roof Q, CVllflC. (purely precaution, I BULLET: At home, I can have friends in my room before the hours of 7:00 and after 11:45pm. Hell, I’ve had that privilege since 4th grade. than 1 do on a college campus. I’m sick of living with cra2y rules. If 1 had wanted to go to prison, I would have committed a crime. My examples include our visitation. We are not allowed to have visitors in our room (or suite) before the hours of 7:00pm or after 11:45pm. Additionally, all guests have to be signed in at the main office (warranting proper identification) before any "hanging out” can happen. There are even guidelines as to what we are allowed to do behind closed doors... but I won’t get into that. The administration will tell us who we can see and what we can do in our “free” time- are they going to spoon feed us our education, too? I am the type of person who, while I may only be aged 18,1 act a lot older Maturity came easily to me, decisions are made with ease and, thankfiilly, they are usually the right ones. I do not dabble in the “wrong” things It makes sense that rules are put in place, by all means, have rules. Without regulations, this world would be pretty messed up. But really, could ya please treat us like the adults you say we are? If we don’t get out into the real world now to make our own decisions (and sometimes. make our own mistakes), how will we function in society when we are completely on our own? Will we go wild with all of our new found freedom? Or, will we act like the mature, responsible, educated, young adults that we are? I personally hope it is the latter. understand that. That doesn’t make it any more attractive). BULLET: Hackley has shelving units in every suite’s bathroom to shelve the residents’ personal care items. One would think that that is not something to complain about... Well, it is. We’re not allowed to use them. I don’t want to get petty and complain about shelves. My problem here is that there has been no explanation as to why all of these wacky rules are put into place. If you’ve implemented a curfew and limits on who can be in our room because there have been problems with late night partying in the past, tell us. If we’ve got bars on our windows because there has been a problem with theft and vandalism, tell us. If we can’t use our shelves because there has been a termite problem, just flipping tell us.
