Stand & Deliver By Amber Bernard Contributing Writer Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, a Princ eton graduate and an ordained min ister, was the guest speaker for the Fayetteville State University's Stand & Deliver Conference on Saturday March 15, 2008. Dr. Dyson spoke on issues ranging from the church, to challenging the bigotry of gender op pression. His speech was geared toward the empowerment of the youth and moti vating older people to expose them selves to the culture of the youth. This will enable older people to have some insight into the lives and perceptions of the younger people, he claims. Dyson also said that the youth have the potential to change the world. He said that people who have changed the world were young peo ple. For example, Martin Luther King Jr., at age 26, organized a boycott to end racial segregation in public trans portation. He encouraged the young audi ence to read, think, to use their brain cells and to be active. He encouraged readers to pay attention to the news and what is going on around them. Read beyond class, beyond the news papers and challenge older people who say you are too young to make a change. He then exposed his knowledge of hip-ho and rap music, which seemed to grab the attention of the young au dience. He spoke of lyricists like Jay-Z, Lauren Hill, Nas, 2-pac, Snoop Dog, Mos Def, Common and many more. He expressed his feeling on the words "Nigger" and "Nigga," and how he believes that the youth do not under stand what older people went through because of those terms. Finally, Dr. Dyson closed with a discussion about his book "Why I Love Black Women" and the power of women. He said "Don't be afraid of a strong woman," which went over well with the female portion of the female audience. Over all, the audience seemed to enjoy his comedic and explicit approach to de livering his speech. Obama opted not to speak at FSU. Is he avoiding us? - Barack Obama is the first African American can didate to have ever had a real shot at the presidency. That fact seems pretty important for a Historically Black College like Fayetteville State. However, when the senator visited Fayetteville this past week he decided to speak at FTCC instead of FSU. The question: Is he avoiding us? Probably. The Obama camp has done a good job of trying to downplay his race, and probably didn’t want a visit to FSU re minding voters that he actually is Black. Just something that I noticed on campus - The sanitation score in the Bronco Cafe is a 90, which is an “A” ranking according to the North Carolina sanitation score rankings. While that may sound good to many, 94% of businesses that require a sanitation score in NC get an “A” ranking. FSU scored at the very bottom of the “A” scale, and is darn close to being ranked at a “B.” The would mean our facilities are pretty bad. Who knows what it takes to get a “B,” because I know I’ve seen bugs m our dining facility before. Do yourself a favor: Get involved around cam- / pus. Take it from me, the experience that I gained while working with a cam- " pus organization landed me a real-world job and prepared me in ways my classes could not. Would you like to see an event on campus? Have a great idea for a new student group? Want to suggest something for the university? SEND US YOUR IDEAS!!!
