There is no way one can attend
a Historically Black University or col
lege and not hear about the won
ders of Honda Campus All-Stars.
These brilliant young men and wom
en practice diligently, are required
to research random topics, and ac
complish the unspeakable. They are
dedicated to the mastery of their art,
which is, literally speaking, knowing
about the most random topics you
can think of.
They apply their knowledge and
genius when they compete in lo
cal and national competitions from
where they answer hard, tedious
questions about more "random
stuff."
In many instances they win thou
sands of dollars, which is given back
to their respective universities for
scholarship funds.
Their home competitions rack
thousands more, which is contrib
uted to various beneficial funds
around the institution. The average
person won't know "What distinc
tive yellow and blue rock you can
find on Mount Everest during Spring
and Fall"...but a Honda All-Star just
might...
The Voice was able to sit down
with Ms. Teah R. Smith, a veteran
Honda Campus All-Star. Miss Smith
is a junior at Fayetteville State Uni
versity, majoring in Psychology and
Middle Grades Education w/ con
centrations in Mathematics and Spe
cial Education.
Like many young women, she
enjoys shopping, computers, and a
little more shopping. She. is also a
part of the elite Delta Alpha Chapter
of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Inc.
and the Honor's Program. She as
pires to earn a Ph. D in educational
psychology and possibly establish a
special learning center for children.

Honda Campus All-Stars?
Teah Smith: The Honda Campus All-
Star Challenge is an academic com
petition between students at Histori
cally Black Colleges and Universities
all across the nation.
TV: What is the main objective of
Honda Campus All-Stars?
Smith: The purpose of the Honda
Campus All-Star Challenge is not
only to provide positive attention
for HBCUs and to allow students the
opportunity to showcase their knowl
edge in hopes to win the champion
ship.
TV: What type of affect has Honda
Campus All-Stars had on Fayetteville
State University (socially, financially,
academically)?
Smith: The Honda Campus All-Stars
her6 at Fayetteville State helps to
build students' leadership as well as
teamwork skills. The team also gives
students' the chance to expand their
knowledge outside of the textbook.
In the past, the Honda Campus
All-Stars has helped to earn over
$75,000 for the university's scholar
ship funds.
TV: What is the history on Honda?
Smith: In 1989, American Honda
Motor Company proposed a pro
gram to College Bowl for Historical
Black Colleges and Universities. To
that end, the Honda Campus All Star
Challenge was born. Since 1996,
the strongest 64 HBCUs compete at
the National Championship Tourna
ment every spring for the highest title
and prize money for their respective
schools.
TV: What are the benefits of being a
Honda Campus All-Star?
Smith:The benefits are endless as
students involved in Honda often get
to travel to regional tournaments, net
work with other players and coaches,
os well as enlarge their general
knowledge base.

While the results of the online poll pictured
to the left are not scientific, and probably do
not represent the feelings of all Fayetteville
State University students, it is striking to look
at some of the responses to this poll and the
short article that accompanied it. 60% of the
students that took our poll said that they be
lieve that racism is a problem at FSU.
If you look at the comments under the story
"Is Racism a Problem at FSU?" on our website.
you will find a few instances in which students
faced what they perceived as racism. While
we acknowledge that we hove no proof that
racism occurred in those instances, most soci
ology professors would probably tell you that
"perception is reality."
If students at Fayetteville State believe
that racism is occurring on campus, that belief
alone can make those students uncomfortable.
What can be done about this issue?
