Alumnus Gives Back by L’Asia Brown 32 years ago, Curtis Worthy gradu ated from Fayetteville State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He was the first in his family to earn a degree. The trained accountant went on to build a lengthy career with the US Treasury, serving on the Fayetteville City Council and opening both Worthy’s Tax Con sultants and Worthy Real Estate, LLC with his wife Janice Worthy, also an alumnus of Fayetteville State Univer sity. Over the course of the last three decades, the Spring Lake resident and NAACP member has demonstrated the power in giving back to FSU. Starting in the fall 2010, students will begin receiving scholarship benefits from the C. Worthy Scholarship Endow ment fund. It’s exclusively for Fayette ville State University. The endowment, which began in 2005, has more than doubled to about $20,000. In difficult economic times for many students, the endowment will help them fund their education. “My passion is with improving the North Carolina Education system,” says Worthy, who is seeking a seat on the North Carolina Senate. “My platform is to ensure that the North Carolina education system is funded and equipped to help students compete in a global society.” Worthy has been actively help ing the new administration focus on increasing fundraising and endowment donations. Chancellor. Dr, James A. Anderson, has stressed the signifi cance in alumni giving, whether the contributions are big or small, every penny will count towards fulfilling a student’s dreams of higher education. “Now is the time to step to the plate. It is a sacrifice, but every sacrifice we make is worth the effort when you can come back and look in the eyes of some young person that you inspired or encouraged or helped to get where they are,” expresses Worthy. Worthy says he believes in the bible verse, “To whom much is given much required.” “My wife and I are legacy circle members. When we pass on, a portion of the Worthy Real Estate Corporation will go to Fayetteville State University.” Mr Worthy has co-chaired and chaired committees dedicated to strategically encouraging alumni to give back. “Research shows that more peo ple with mediocre incomes contribute in higher numbers together than those with the greater resources,” comments Mr. Worthy. “I want to encourage others to visualize and understand the seri ousness of getting a good education. Journalism Program Coming Soon by L’Asia Brown The fall 2010 semester will welcome a highly anticipated new major that has seen exponential growth at universities both domestic and intemational. With Ameri cans becoming more and more hungry for quality, reliable, fast news in the forms of ever-evolving technology, demand for news reporters, news anchors, and newsroom researchers has more than tripled in the past decade. In the past, students at Fayetteville State University wishing to pursue media careers leaned towards a BA in Communi cations with a concentration in Speech or Mass Communications or a BA in English. Soon, students will have the option of a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Journalism. The Com munications faculty is expanding its family to include three new professors who will increase the class selections to include new journalism courses. “We are training the next generation of media professionals. We want to make sure they get the best of the best-labs, technology, faculty," said Dr Todd Frobish, Associate Professor and Area Coordinator in the College of Arts and Sciences. Fayetteville State University has two main outlets that will allow journalism students to gain valuable career experience and experiment with what different types of media communication fit their personalities and goals. The Voice Newspaper and the student radio station. Bronco Radio, give students the opportunity to get inside the daily functions of news, writing, speaking, and catering to a specific audience. Bron co Radio will be student run. “I want people to look at it as another club or organization that means something. People look at the greeks and SAC (Student Activities Council) and say if you’re not in those you aren’t doing anything. This can mean a lot to a lot of people,” said Bronco Radio Marketing Director, Sophomore Alexis Kondratyk. Media and journalism careers are highly competitive and often require intern ship or prior work experience just for entry level positions. Students interested in pursuing the new major should consult with their academic advisor or contact Dr. Todd Frobish at TFROBISH@uncfsu.edu.
