Greek Comer Delta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. On January 13, 1913, 22 women at Howard University founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. witti intentions on promoting strength, sisterhood, scholarly excellence and dedication to community service. 107 years and almost 200,000 members later. Delta Sigma Theta continues to play a vital role in the educational and economic advance ment of young women domestically and internationally. The Delta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on the campus of Fayetteville State University in November of 1952. The Voice Newspaper sat down with Destiney Young, the president of the Delta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to see how the young ladies are continuing the tradition of service. The Voice Newspaper: As the president of the Delta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., what are the top three qualities that you believe are important to instill in your programs? Destiney Young: Three qualities that we feel are important to include in all of our programs are organization, self-empowerment, and awareness. These three qualities help our programs not only run smoother but leave a last ing impression on our Bronco community. My sorors have recalled numerous occasions where our fellow peers have asked when will a certain program be held again, because the information given was so beneficial. TVN: Between step shows, sorority hosted club nights and “yard rivalry”, Greek imagery is often tainted. From within the circle, what is sorority membership truly about to you? DY: Sorority membership in Delta Sigma Theta Soror ity, Inc. in my opinion is not at all about what others see on the outside (i.e. step shows, sorority hosted club nights, yard rivalry, etc.); instead it is about our chance as sisters within our chapter. Delta XI, to make a difference on FSU’s campus. By fulfilling the principles of our sorority and continuing the legacy set by our founders and previous chapter members. TVN: In the past, the mission of the “Divine Nine” orga nizations was primarily geared towards helping African- American men and women advance in the pursuit of higher education and careers. Now that globalization is being encouraged, has Delta Sigma Theta, Inc: broadened their philanthropy efforts to include non-blacks? DY: Well, to begin with, Delta Sigma Theta Soror ity Inc., has expanded membership throughout the world with 900 plus chapters including places like Bermuda and Japan so that we could reach people of all ethnicities and races. There are several programs that our sorority has initiated to uplift all people, which include. Healthy Lifestyle and Financial Fortitude. Both of these programs are com mitted to uplifting and changing people's lifestyles for a healthier and more prosperous future. TVN: What type of programs will the Delta Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc implement for the Spring 2010 semester? What goals does your organization wish to ac complish by implementing these programs? DY; During the Spring 2010 semester we plan to continue implementing programs through our Five Point Programmatic Thrusts which include: Economic Develop ment, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Initiating our programs through this system allows Delta Xi to reach out to our peers by highlighting the issues that really matter as a college student. Programs like, “Young, Cute, Fabulous and Broke!” are implemented to teach our FSU Broncos about managing their money without frivolously spending it once refund checks are issued. Ultimately through our programs, we want to open up the minds of our peers and encourage them. TVN: A sorority built on strength and truth, how does Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continue to spread its seeds of wisdom throughout the world? DY: An important program that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., has initiated is Delta Days at the United Na tions. This program not only allows Deltas to have hands on experience in our global politics but it also allows us to mold and shape some of our community initiatives accord ing to what is needed. For example. Mission Hospital is a program that was developed to help hospitals in African countries get the supplies they need to properly treat their prospective communities. ■ ■ It L Fine Arts & Entertainment at FSU The Department of Performing & Fine Arts hosts several great events open to stu dents each month.
