The last 500 years has seen Western civilizations casting off the ideas of monarchs and religious conformity, and instead embracing these now well-established democratic Ideals—ideals that continue to spread as we watch the news today. Yet the societies founded on protecting the rights of ordinary Individuals represent only a fraction of recorded human history. Humanities 212 intersession course explores how the arts—music, theatre, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, cinema—participate in both maintaining and challenging ideologies over time. This multi-media, discussion- based course will culminate in a planned trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. Class hours will vary and will include some evening sessions. But where did the writer get them from? Odds are, from Philosophy. Join us as we watch some classic and contemporary films, study a few classical philosophical texts, then discuss the philosophical themes embedded in those movies. First, to provide students with a background on the concepts of and theoretical perspectives toward international organizations. Second, to provide detailed information on the United Nations, the only truly universal international organization and, as some would say, a possible incubator of a world government. Third, to provide detailed information on the European Union, the most integrated international organization in human history. We will begin with these broader questions, and will then discuss international organizations specifically, as well as non state actors. The course will conduct simulations of UN Security Council reform project and EU analysis and conclude with student presentations, in which we discuss the way you have applied these broader perspectives to a specific issue or problem in international organization.
