A NEW BRA BEGINS By Brandon Davis The Fayetteville State University football team completed spring ball April 13 with an intrasquad scrimmage at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium that ended in a 17-6 victory for the defense. New head coach Lawrence Kershaw and his staff split the team into two separate squads with offensive players wearing white jerseys and defensive players donning Bronco blue. The contest served as the first chance for Bronco fans to see just what new head man Kershaw has done to retool a team that finished a disappointing 2-8 last season, but also returned a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. The most impressive showing of the contest was unquestionably the defense, notably the secondary. The offense was held to just two field goals on their red zone attempts due, largely in part, to the defensive line’s ability to get backfield penetration and disrupt the offense’s timing. Coach Kershaw spoke highly of his defense when questioned after the scrimmage. “I think the defense did a good job of keeping us out of the end zone. The offense did a good job of moving the ball [as well].” Coach Kershaw said. “Now we just have to put the ball in the end zone. Usually in a scrimmage the defense is going to be a little ahead because we’ve been running the same plays in practice for the last 15 days and they kind of know what you’re going to run. But it’s always good when your defense plays well this early.” The spring football game was viewed by the athletic department as an opportunity to usher in a new era of FSU Broncos football and also allow former players to return to campus and meet the new coaching staff. IndThe Award Goes To????? By Jerone Gray 8 NOW that all of the spring sports are over, it is time for the awards to be handed out. Many people think that athletic award ceremonies are just for student athletes and their families, but really it is for the whole school and community. If you think this event is going to be some boring old ceremony then you are sadly mistaken. This glorious event is a showcase of the wonderful talent at Fayetteville State University. You just never know who might show up. Everyone should come out April 22 at 5:30 p.m. to J. W. Seabrook Auditorium to help celebrate FSU’s outstanding athletes. This event is free admission.
