Page 2'‘ Wayne Community College November 25, 1968 SIGMA TAU SICMA ORGANIZED SGA NEWS Sigma Tau Sigma, a Service Fraternity, was organized on October 10. The purpose of this fraternity is to develop leadership, friendship, and to promote service to the student * body, the faculty, the community, and to the "brothers" them- * selves. * Sigma Tau Sigma Service Fraternity members are very proud * of themselves because their fraternity is the first of its * kind in the community college program in North Carolina. * The fraternity sponsored a general "clean up" in front of * the classroom buildings. They successfully held a car wash * at the Phillip 66 station on Berkeley Boulevard to raise funds. ^ Also, during the recent election period, members of the * fraternity and others campaigned for a local district judge. * This was also a sourse of raising funds. Last week a pizza * party was given for those who helped in this project. * One of the future projects of the Sigma Tau Sigma is ob- * taining butt cans for the classroom buildings. At the beginning of the winter quarter, the Sigma Tau Sigma ^ will have a "rush" period for those boys who are interested in ^ belonging to the fraternity and have at least a "C" average. * * by James Joyner * **************** it* * SCIEircE CLUB SPONSORS SYMPOSIUM * * The Science Club, under the direction of Dr. William D. * Draper, Chairman of the Science Department, presented a * Symposium entitled, "Tomorrow is Here - Are You Ready?" It ^ lasted from 3 pm to 10 pm November 22 at St. Stephens Parrish * House, downtown Goldsboro. * Months of planning, organizing and sending for quality films * and displays came to a successful conclusion at the Symposium. * Among the many displays was a specially designed typewriter * which was "tied in" to a digital computor in Raleigh. Mr. Ed- ^ ward Blakeway, Adjunct Professor of Computor Technology at NC * State University, asked several people in the audience to ask * questions dealing with scientific and mathmatical problems * that were answered by the computor in a language called "Basic." * Mr. Loy Diggers, the Chief Medical Technologist at feyne ^ County Memorial Hospital, performed blood typing tests for the * visitors, checking Rh factors, etc. * Dr. Daniel Carrol, Professor of Food Chemistry at NC State, * demonstrated and provided samples of protein food products ^ such as bacon strips which are made from soy beans. He spoke * about Bontrae, one of the new protein foods made from spun soy * protein, other nutrients and flavorings, with a flavor like * beef, chicken and ham. Bontrae was shown to be ideal for veg- itarians, people on special diets and people with religious ^ dietary restrictions for, as Dr. Draper puts it, "You can eat * pork that has never seen a pig!" ^ Science Club members showed films and directed discussions on "The History of Hallucinogenic Drugs," "LSD and Marijauna," * and the "Fantastic Light - Laser." There was also a very * interesting discussion entitled, "Science Disrupts Religion * and Philosophy. » by Karen R. Advertising Manager James Joyner Feature Editor Bettye Cox * oy * Guy Williams, President The Student Government As sociation, throught the ef forts of advisors, adminis tration, and others, has got ten off to a good start this year. Due to our change of status from a technical institute to a community college, the con stitution of the SGA is being revised to bring up to stand ard our qualities as a college. This year's SGA has pledged itself to a year of hard work and with the cooperation and support of the entire student body, our goals will be met. Communication is a problem among students at WCC. That is why there will be a Com munique"^ reporter present at all SGA meetings to keep the students informed on all SGA activities. Thus far, two dances have been sponsored by the SGA. Both dances were successful, to a certain extent. There were only a limited number of people who were willing to help decorate for the dance, etc. I would like to say to those individuals, "Thank you for your interest in your school and for help ing in the SGA program." I'hope that in the future more of you will give the SGA your utmost support. Remember, the Student Gov ernment Association is Your organization, and it is op erated for Your benefit. Don't let all the work and burdens fall on just a few people I Participate in your student government as much as possible. **************** WCC CHOIR ORGANIZED WCC organized its first official choir October 8.
