page.l6 Wayne Coanrunity College February 5, 1969 THE SPORTS PAGE FUG FOOTBALL BASKETBALL WCC emerged as City Cheuups by mutilating the defending champ, Shoe Show, Ferrell's, and Bryan Oil Company. Under the brilliant leadership of quarterback R.B. Hiint (2 t.d.'s) from the Forestry Dept. the tough gridders went 5 and 1 to win the first championship for the college since entering the city league. Each player re ceived individual trophies entitled "City Champs," which can be seen in President Clyde Erl/in's office. The team consists of offensive end J.L. Tyner (1 td) from College Parallel; co-captain Terry Pilkington (1 td), wing- back, from Recreational Grounds Management; half-back Gaylan Ambrose (l td) from the Forestry Dept.; co-captain Milford Jones (A td's), fullback, from College Parallel; linebacker Rick Crisman, College Parallel; linebacker Ed Wood, College Parallel; line backer Tom Utley, Forestry; end and tackle Ron Tingen, College Parallel; kicker and defensive halfback Johrjiy Jemigan, from College Parallel; defensive half-back Marion Edwards;from College Parallel; offensive and defensive tackle Robert Hicks from College Parallel; defensive tackle Mike Large, Forestry; center FrarJc Bartley, Drafting and Design; linebacker George Joseph, College Parallel; tackle and end R.L. Downing, from the Business Dept.; offensive halfback and linebacker Raymond Walters, Business; defensive and end Stuart Dudley, Forestry; guard Stanley Swain, College Parallel; and defensive end Mike Westbrook, Business. INTRAMURALS An intramurals program has been set up under the directorship of Milford Jones, a college parallel student. Anyone wishing to participate in the Bridge tournament should select his partner. The Intramural Board consists of these representatives: Paulette Taylor (Nursing Dept.); Rick Ughetto (Business Dept.); Robert Yarberry (Mechanics Dept.) and Linda Brigmanfrom the Dental Dept, WCC's Basketball team is in hot competition with, ^he City league and other community colleges. Under the competent direction of Coach Charles Lee, the hard-working team consists of Frank Bartley, forward (drafting and design); Boot Coor, guard (draft ing and design); Marion Edwards, for ward (college parallel); Larry Elliott, forward (electronics); Mike Large, forward (forestry); Elbert Parker, guard(watchjnaking); Franklin Pickett, guard (drafting and design); Terry Pilkington, guard (recreational grounds management); Rick Ughetto, guard, (business); and Richard Wilson, guard (electronics). January 11. WCC dropped its first college basketball game to Beaufort Community College. The hard-fighting cagers lost the battle by a score of 60 to 51. Alfred Smith, with 14- points and 8 rebounds, and Galen Ambrose, with 12 points and 12 rebounds, let in both scoring and rebounds. January 13. WCC defeated Borden in a game of slow down by 4-0-36. Mike Large dumped in 15 points and grabbed 9 re bounds. Elbert Parker had 9 points and Galen Ambrose hit 6. Alfred Smith was second in rebounding with 4- January 16. Wayne Community College played one of its best games before going down in defeat to Music and Sports by a score of 79-57. During the first half. Music and Sports led by 8 at one time but was cut down to 3 before the half. The gallant cagers were led by Alfred Smith with 15 points and Larry Elliott with 12, In reboimding, Mike Large and Rick Ughetto had 7 each. January 18. In the early stages of the game, WCC led by 3 points, then we lost to a strong Seymour Johnson team, 69-39* Leading WCC in scoring were Terry Pilkington and Alfred Smith with 11 points each. Leading rebounders were Alfred Smith with 9 and Mike Large with (continued, page 17)
