page 2 Wayne Community College February 5, 1969 COMMUNITY COLLEGE GETTING NEW BUILDING The faculty and staff of Wayne Community College and the friends of the college are excited now that the prospect of the long awaited new classroom building has finally become a reality. Over the past year the college has reserved $33,000 as the local required share of a $352,000-classroom building. "All but the $33,000, raised in the county, is from a federal grant made available to WCC by virtue of adding a college transfer program," stated Clyde A. Erwin, Jr., the college's president. He went on to say that "We are looking forward to September occupancy. Bids will be let in April." "According to some of the findings, however, it appears that even with the new building, the amount of floor space per student will be approximately 60 percent of that recommended by the state," said Walter Brown, dean of the faculty. Much of the president's time, along with the members of his administrative staff, during the past year has been spent in following the progress of some of the grants for which the new college has applied. In addition to the new classroom building, there is the prospect of getting the planned annex to the existing voca tional building. A matching portion of $4.0,000 from local sources will bring to Wayne County $l60,000 for a $200,000 addition to the modem vocational building. Housed in the existing portion of the vocational building is part of the Power Mechan ics Division Auto-Diesel Mechanics, Mechanical Drafting and Design, part of the Busi ness Department and part of the new Aviation Maintenance Technology program just in augurated this year. MOST WCC GRADUATES PASS STATE BOARDS The Nursing Department at Wayne Commun ity College is especially proud of their graduates (and since 1957 they number 281). At the end of their training, the Prac tical Nursing students inust be licensed by passing the State Board Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses. Of the 281 to complete training at WCC, 279 have passed the state board examination. Usually, the local college's graduates rank in the upper portion of those tested. This year all of the graduates passed with high scores and one graduate made the highest marks in the state. The department has also graduated 112 girls in Nurses Aid and 2L, in Home Health Aid. In September of 1970, the College will begin a new program to train two-year Registered Nurses and grant to them the Associated of Applied Science Degree. These graduates will be qualified for nursing * and carrying out other therapeutic measures ^ with a high degree of skiil. The larger of the two new buildings has an additional quality, at long last the college is plan ning to include a degree of aesthetic appreciation in the design. This has always been considered but shortage of funds dictated that appearance and design had to be sacrificed for functional utilization. In the ciirrent building schedule, the primary effort is to expand and improve the vocational and technical programs. This is in keeping with the tradition of the college as a center that is some kind of program for everyone. Mr. Erwin went on to say, "WCC is very fortunate to be the child of such excellent support of outstanding Wayne County parents of institution." President Erwin expressed pleasure at having an in stitution where the demands made upon it exceed budget limitations. "Our number one obstacle is not having enough money to do all the things for all the people just the way we would like to do them," he said. "But, don't we all have that problem?" -New Argus
