PAr,F, 3 ' WAYNE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. "September 8, 176V COLLEGE PARALLEL PROGRAM The college parallel program at Wayne Community College serves several purposes, only one of which is the preparation of students for transfer to four-year insti tutions . The primary purpose of the college division is to furnish programs of study and related courses in general and theoretical areas for all students. As the technical and vocational departments offer specific instruction related to specific occupations and professions, f the college parallel courses are nr specific and general. The courses offered are for all stuc nt personnel and are part of all progr. s. There is no difference between the am ant of preparation and the quality of teac ing between one department and another. In fact, judging from this past year, I would say that a good vocational instructor requires more preparation and is therefore more difficult to find than a technical instructor. In most areas of study, college parallel instructors are the easiest to find. Incidentally, of all our faculty who are teaching transfer-credit courses, only one teacher has not taught technical and vocational course work as well. By starting the college transfer course work, Wayne Community College has been able to offer courses and programs that would not otherwise be available. For example, all English courses are under the direction of the college parallel division. Not only are the standard English courses taught—courses not for transfer and similar in context to what is taught at all technical institutes—but as part of the college program courses in Amerioan literature, world literature and other courses on our written cultural heritage are also taught, These courses are open to all students but would not be available if we did not have the college parallel division. Wayne Community College is still Wayne Technical Institute as well. We offer a wide range of technical-vocational programs, and we shall continue to do so. The college transfer programs are in addition to, not in place of, what we have always done. However, different programs require different backgrounds, different preparation, different patterns of ability. Do not consider any program as being better or easier than another. Rather, ask yourself the questions, "What can I prepare to do? What do I want to do to enrn a living?" The answer determines which program is best for you. CLUB FOR FUTURE NURSES The Practical Nursing Club consists of the students in the Practical Nurse Educa tion Program. It is designed to emphasize and maintain the standards of nursing. The officers for 1969-70 are Melba Dale, President; Judi Austin, Vice-Presid- ent; and Ann Scott, Secretary-treasurer. On July 31, Dr. Woodrow Batten of Johnston Memorial Hospital lectured the senior students on the Nursing Responsi bility in the Intensive Care Unit. The lecture ended with a tour of the Intensive Care Unit. These students help the Red Cross at the Blood Mobile each time it visits. This year is no exception— already students have contributed time to the Blood Mobile. Other events include the tour of 0'Berry Center by the senior students and a picnic given in honor of the Practical Nursing Education instructors by the freshmen students.
