Page 2—The Wayne Communique, WCC, Goldsboro, N.C., March 22, 1972 In Support Of Student Leaders In time, men will say, “This was our finest hour.” We are embarking on a new venture in the political arena. The student leaders of WCC are fast becoming leaders in the state’s two student organizations. But without the student support at Wayne all our effort is lost. At the present tune we are grossly involved in the North Carolina State Student Legislature. Our mission in . ... this state-wide organization at ASSOCiatlOn pittallS this time is to lead the fight for I implore you to help si^)- port student leaders. It is your rally chance to be a part of what is changing our world. You got to get off your xxxxx and knock off the xxxxxxxx of apathy. WE only got one life to live and if we blow it, it is only our fault. By JOHNPREVETTE Student Government THE WAYNE COMMUNIQUE The Wayne Conmiunique is published monthly for the students of Wayne Community College under the sponsorship of the student Government Association. The opinions ex pressed here do not necessarily represent those of the Board of Directors, Staff or Faculty of WCC. The Staff is as follows: Editor; Stephen Byron Diehl Asst. Editor: JohnWhitesell Layout mgr: JeanEdgerton Proof Reader Debbie Evans Photographer: Craig Smith Bomb Hits K. Building the revision of General Statue 115A-7 which would give the president of the student government association to the BOARD OF TRUSTEES of Said Institutions as Ex-officio voting members. For the layman let me explain what this could mean for the student. As the system is working now, the school is run by older people who may or may not know the needs of the students here at Wayne. I Propose that if we had a student on the board of Trustees we could make our demands heard to the board and could vote down issues that are not for the benefit of the students. I cannot express strongly enough the feeling I have for strong student control. It is not enough that we have a student govern ment, but we must have a strong voice in the running of this school. We are being told and told that we are the leaders of tomorrow — But I say let us unite and lead today. WE must become leaders among our peers and in order to do this we must rise up and lead. There are students who are taking the role of student leaders. But without your help and support we, the student leaders, will become as a tinkling cymble and we will not be able to justify our means. It surely would be a sad commentary on our time if the younger would become as the older generation has always portrayed us to be. I say we are more, much more! Ecological Disaster The community of man is facing a new danger—that of ecological disaster. Our headlong, often thoughtless rush to “progress” and never ceasing quest for material comfort have left in their way the destruction of our natural environment. Our disregard for the interdependence of all living things has brought us face to face with the ultimate ' question of man’s survival. The effort to preserve our environment and improve the quality of life demands a reordering of priority and a deep commitment from us all. Government and industry bear a large part of the bur den, but each human being shares in this responsibility. You have the ability to respond, to act, to educate, to work with your community to create and guide change. Hie beginning of a better world must begin with the concern and sensitivity of each one of us. You can help to save the earth. The Woozle At any college, University or Institute, You should be able to look to the SGA to find the strength of the student body. The backbone of the student anatomy — the real student leaders — the dependable and responsible students at the schools. Well even though this is usually true, believe me it most definitely has its exceptions. Whether you students realize it or not, its fact that the SGA belongs to you, just as the Government of the United States belongs to the citizens therein. It is your perogative to fight for the things you believe in, vote the way you feel, and this be represented by people that you can depend on. When this is not true, you can be assured that you are not only hurting yourself, but also the student body as a whole, the school, the com munity, and even the state. Wayne Community College is fast becoming one of the finest two-year Institutes of higher learning in the state. It is truely a sad predicament when the SGA of such an in stitute falls into the category which ours at WCC does. To start with, half of the mem bers of the SGA never show up for the meetings — fantastic! Next, the ones who do show up never seem to be able to get the information back to the students. It’s even so bad that you could walk into a meeting and listen to them squander over the fact that there aren’t enough people present to vote on a matter of urgency — so they do nothing. What is the purpose of even having an SGA if it is going to operate in this manner? NONE! Organization is what we need, and you students at WCC can be the only ones responsible for getting the SGA organized. We have a constitution which contains the duties of the officers, and it will work!! I !- What we need to do is listen carefully to the candidates and weigh out all of the facts about their platform, then put the people in office whom you know will do the job and do it right. To insure this, and to transmit information between the students and the SGA,. elect representatives that will work to the fullest of their ability to give you proper representation. Don’t stop there by any means, take your ideas, comments, and arguments to your representatives and have them to present this to the SGA at the meetings. You even have the right to sit in on the meetings yourself and find out first hand just what is going on. In short, “Give a Damn, Apathy is a pitiful excuse” Work together in unity and your SGA will work for you! Do not even bother to read this article, you apathetic students. The bomb didn’t hurt you, so what do you care, anyway? If it had hit you, you might have been concerned — however it did not, so forget it! And do the same thing about the SGA elections — if you are not running for an office, forget about them. Do not dare make an effort to go to the campaign speeches, {you might be bored with college affairs). And do not give voting a second thought, even if the results do affect you and your college. So what? And do not be concerned about any other aspects of WCC either — like the paper or the annual. You do not read them anyway. Same as the basketball games — you did not play, so you just did not go. You have probably already forgot about the bomb (remember-“K” building). It figures — just the same way you forget about anything else other than your classes at WCC!! You could really get involved and make it a GREAT college, you know. One that everyone is proud of but no — it’s too easy to sit back and do nothing. You have just going to be apathetic and let the same people do everything. Thank God there is a few who will do something!!! Polls Of Concern .Results of Various Poles taken by W. H. Long Marketing, Inc.: Governor: Democrats’ choice—Skipper Bowles 37.4 percent Republicans’ choice — Jim Gardner 59.3 percent Drugs: Should students in North Carolina’s high schools, colleges, and universities be tested for drug addicition: No 37.2 percent, Yes 34.4 percent. “Do you think the will of the majority of adult Americans is prevailing in the govern ment of our country today?” No 64.1 percent, Yes 28.2 percent. “Do you think the will of the majority of adult North Carolinians is prevailing in the government of our state today?” No 48.3 percent. Yes 37.2 percent. “Since President Nixon’s wage-price “freeze” was removed in November, what is your impression of what has happened to the cost of living in your area?” Has increased 41.4 percent, Has decreased 3.3 percent. Has stayed about the same as it was 54.1 per cent. “Churchgoing. has been declining nationally for some time. Which one or more of the following causes do you think is most responsible for it (if more than one please number causes in order of im portance)?” . First: Ministers departing fi'om Bible. Second: Ministers ad vocating socialism or com munism. Third: Nationwide growth of atheism. Increasing of older Fourth: wickedness generation. Fifth : wickedness generation. Increasing of younger Need For Orientation Team Several student at WCC have felt the need for an orientation team of students which could present the purpose, scope, and objectives of Wayne Community College to potential students not only in Wayne County but through the state. Being fully in favor of the community college program and being interested in WCC particular, they wish to extend its academic ex cellence and social growth to counties throughout the state. While other colleges and in stitutes approach high school juniors and seniors con cerning enrollment, WCC has depended solely on pamphlets distributed and word of mouth communications. A “C” average or 2.0 QPA from Wayne will transfer to any four-year college or university with exception of certain subjects, liiere is no reason why we at WCC cannot recruit the “cream of the crop.” Students who are interested in this idea and think they could make worth contributions may contact. Stephen Diehl, Johnny Wiggs, Hazel Broom, John Whitesell, or Debbie Evans. This could prove to be a great asset to the college and generate state-wide interest in Wayne Community College. The Ivewsp Meeds You! Staff- Apologizes A sincere apology goes out to the brothers of Delta Chi Omega from the entire newspaper staff. Due to an oversight of a reporter, in the last issue, credit was not given to the fraternity brothers for the con tribution that they made at the Miss WCC Dance. Delta Chi gave twenty- five dollars to the Student Activities Committee to be used as needed for decorations and flowers at the dance. This money was used and was greatly ^preciated.
