Foundation

By A. Z. Hubbard-Thomas
The Foundation 0+ Wayne
Community College has received a
*30,000 donation to honor George
E. Wilson, a -former trustee at
WCC, and a civic leader in the
community. The bene-factor
wishes to remain anonymous,
according to Jo Ann Bruce,
Foundation Director.
The donation was originally
■for $29,000, but was changed to
make it an even $30,000.
Part o-f the donation will be
used -for the Teacher Excellence
Award presented to an out
standing -faculty member
annually at graduation.
Three previous winners o-f
this award will receive $1000
each: Robert Krieger, chairman
of the Enginnering Department;
Faye Weeks, instructor in the
Business Department: and Rosalyn
Lomax, English instructor in the
Liberal Arts Department.
An endowment -fund has been
established for the remainder of
the money; it will raise about
$800.00 in interest per year.
Bruce stated, "We have
purchased a Kawai concert grand
piano for the new campus. WCC
scholarships are now available
for the first time."
When asked what his role as
president will be, he responded:
"I want the student body to
understand that they are really
the president. I'm just here to
assure that everyone's ideas and
problems are heard and met
fairly."
Kevin Fryar is the newly
elected vice president. He is
originally from Santa Barbara^
California.
"We also help students with
emergency loans until they
receive their financial aid."
The latest contribution is
from Goldsboro Milling Company,
Inc. and will be used to place a
sculpture on the new campus.
The contribution is in honor
of Billy Shepard, retired
General Manager of Goldsboro
Milling. Shepard currently
serves on the Board of Directors
of the Foundation at WCC.

The Foundation of Wayne
Community College was founded in
1986. Its purpose and mission
are to broaden the base of
community support and to promote
educational development.
The Foundation is achieving
these goals through the
solicitation of private gifts of
money and property and the
investment, management and
disbursement of such assets to
enhance the educational programs
and services offered by the
college.
Being from an Air Force
family is what brought him to
Goldsboro. He is presently a
college transfer student who
plans to attend N.C. State and
major in meteorology.
Fryar feels that the student
body should know that there is a
student government. "We're here
to help because we can help."
Smoking issue
still being
considered
By Elgin Brvant
The smoking issue continues
to be debated at Wayne Community
College.
In September 1988, student
Pat Harrell circulated a
petition which suggested that
specific smoking and non-smoking
areas be designated.
Harrell and other concerned
students collected 643
signatures on the petition.
In October Harrell presented
the petition to the Student
Government Association who in
turn presented the petition to
the college administration for
its consideration.
WCC administrative officials
requested that College Council
devise a smoking policy.
In February 1989 the Smoking
Policy Committee submitted the
following policy to the Council
for its approval:
1. That no smoking occur in the
classroom setting.
2. That during committee
meetings, a smoke break be
considered whereby smokers would
leave the meeting area.
3. That the maintenance
department post "designated
smoking area" signs in all
building entranceways.
Tina Thomas is Secretary
elect. Thomas is from Faro and
is attending WCC in pursuit of a
double major. Medical and
Executive secretary.
Tim Williams will be SGA
Treasurer in the fall. Williams
is a college transfer student
who plans to become a Physical
Education major.

4. That in office areas where
smokers and non-smokers work
together, workers by common
agreement should determine their
smoking policy; the committee
encourages workers to use a
designated smoking area.
5. That in the Student Union
and dining areas on the new
campus, easily visible signs
designate both SMOKING and NON
SMOKING sections.
6. That on the new campus,
there be a designated non
smoking restroom in each
building.
7. That on the old campus,
ashtrays be provided in the
restrooms, thereby making these
areas designated smoking areas.
8. That more outside ashtrays
be provided to minimize the
litter from smoking and to
reduce the hazard of fire.
The Smoking Policy Committee
consisted of students Lewis
Coble, non-smoker, and Marion
Dees, smoker; staff members P.
A. Best and Leo Taswell,
smokers; and faculty members Liz
Meador and Mike Saylors, non-
smokers.
The College Council approved
th policy and forwarded it to
the Administrative Council for
its approval.
The Administrative Council
has made no definite decision
regarding the policy as of this
printing.
