12 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 22,1989 VOICE has birthday By S. Doreen Davis The .burnalism class at Wayne Community College is celebrating its first year by publishing a twelve-page newspaper for the spring issue instead of the usual eight-page spread. Last month "The Campus Voice" won two awards from the Public Relations Committee of the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association (N4CSGA) at its 1989 spring conference. The awards were for "Best Newspaper Overall" and "Best Newspaper Format." In the winter quarter of 1988» Liz Meador* English instructor, spent three months working with newspaper staffs in Goldsboro* Hount Olive, and Raleigh as part of the "Back to Industry" program sponsored by WCC. The purpose of this experience was to revive a campus newspaper that would be the product of an introductory journalism course Meador would teach. Students on the three newspaper staffs which produced the award-winning papers were: spring quarter 1988: Angie Ballard, Renee Hill, Yvonne Crespo, ViNita Warren, and Martha O'Neal; fall quarter 1988: Carl Auvil, Connie Best, Lewis Coble, Rhonda McIntosh, Chris Plummer, and Craig Smith; winter quarter 1989: Whitney Edwards, De Elliott, John Reaves (deceased), and Stewart Pittman. The staff is proud of what we have accomplished in Just one short year, and we hope to encourage student interest in being on the news staff and in considering a career in Journalism. One student on the present staff, Azlea Hubbard-Thomas, has already obtained a Job with a local paper, the "Goldsboro News-Argus" because of her interest in Journalism and her exptrienct in this class. Students can also acquire co op credit for this course. In this class we have learned how to gather ads, write news stories of interest to the students, do feature articles, interview clients, design a page layout for eye appeal, take appropriate pictures for our articles, and to develop self- control under pressure. Jim Thomas, Director of Planning and Research at WCC and assignment editor for "The Tarheel Minuteman," lectured on his role as a Journalist with the National Guard and ways to improve our newspaper. Winkie Lee, "Goldsboro News Argus" features editor, has also lectured on the writing of features to previous classes. De Elliot, winter Journalism student, has given advice and help to this class on many occasions even though she is no longer receiving college credit for her effort. The Media Department has given valuable assistance with layout, photography, headlines, and ads. Appreciation is extended to advisors Liz Meador and John Vincell. Happy Birthday, Campus Voice!
