Herman Porter made clear to the Board o-f Trustees, in an executive session after its regularly scheduled meeting, his intention to announce h i s re t i remen t. On the -f o 1 1 ow i n g day, Porter issued an announcement -for a meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the North Campus Lec ture Hall to in-form ■faculty, sta-f-f, and the media o-f his plans to retire by spring 1992. Porter told those attending the meeting that he wants more time to spend with his ■f am i I y . Referring to a statement his 20- month-old granddaughter made: "I wanna see him,'* Porter said that he had heard one of the most influential and powerful commands of his -life. Porter first came to Wayne Community College in October 1986 to serve until July 1987 as interim (acting) presi dent. During this interim Porter became interest ed in the future of the college with its plans for a new campus. "In time I got excited about being a part of Wayne Community College and on my own motion applied for the job as permanent presi dent.■ Then in August of 1987, the Board of Trustees selected Porter as U)CC"s president. Porter said, "All my professional life has been spent in educa tion." Throughou t his master^s program, he served as a graduate assistant at North Carol i na State University <NCSU). Porter said that his first major contribu tion to education grew out of his master''s thesis which was a study of the develop ment of introduction to vocations courses in the public schools of Nor th Caroli na. Porter has held various positions in the Department of Com munity Colleges and in the State Department. At a very young age Porter served on a staff to develop the community college system including making 1aws, policy, and recommendations to the Legislature. He has served as an interim president for two other community colleges in the system. Porter attributed his achievements to other college personnel and to community sup porters of the college. "When I came here, I found an outstanding community college, which was equal to any college in teaching and learning. In my opin- i on the qual i ty has been maintained and perhaps enhanced." One of Porter''s goals was to make decisions that reflect ed a fairness and consistency that would be right for the total col 1ege. ■ I feel this is one of my greatest accom- plishments, which is real 1y ethics in admi n i strat i on . *' •Fol1owi ng that principle," Porter stated, "has helped other employees to be motivated to develop the college further." Porter said "I would like the college to continue to be an out standing quality insti tution with employees who enjoy performing the i r roles." Dr. 6. Heraan Porter He said that he would also like to see the college fully com pleted and landscaped. Porter wants to leave both the students and the faculty with a chal1enge; "I wouId like to challenge the students to get more involved in student activities so that they can know that love, fun, power, and freedom they need to experience outside of the classroom." "To the faculty, I chal1enge them to keep on experiencing the love of teaching including its aspects of drama and stimula ting exchanges with studen ts." "My experience at Wayne Community College has been very pleasant from my view point." Porter said that being a part of a quality college at the end of his career has been the most ful filling and exciting experience of his professional life. The Col 1ege Counc i1 with the Board is creating a profile of strengths a candidate for the position should have, Kannan said. Uhen the profile is completed, it wi11 be given to a Screening Ccwnmittee which will consist of 4 faculty members, 3 non-teaching staff, 2 students, and 4 at-large members of the community. continued page 2
