On Tuesday, Septem
ber 24, 1991, Dr. 6.
Herman Porter made
clear to the Board o-f
Trustees, in an
executive session after
its regularly scheduled
meeting, his intention
to announce h i s
re t i remen t.
On the -f o 1 1 ow i n g
day, Porter issued an
announcement -for a
meeting at 9:30 a.m. in
the North Campus Lec
ture Hall to in-form
■faculty, sta-f-f, and the
media o-f his plans to
retire by spring 1992.
Porter told those
attending the meeting
that he wants more time
to spend with his
■f am i I y .
Referring to a
statement his 20-
month-old granddaughter
made: "I wanna see
him,'* Porter said that
he had heard one of the
most influential and
powerful commands of
his -life.
Porter first came to
Wayne Community College
in October 1986 to
serve until July 1987
as interim (acting)
presi dent.
During this interim
Porter became interest
ed in the future of the
college with its plans
for a new campus.
"In time I got
excited about being a
part of Wayne Community
College and on my own
motion applied for the
job as permanent
presi dent.■
Then in August of
1987, the Board of
Trustees selected
Porter as U)CC"s
president.
Porter said, "All my
professional life has
been spent in educa
tion."
Throughou t his
master^s program, he
served as a graduate
assistant at North
Carol i na State
University <NCSU).
Porter said that his
first major contribu
tion to education grew
out of his master''s
thesis which was a
study of the develop
ment of introduction to
vocations courses in
the public schools of
Nor th Caroli na.
Porter has held
various positions in
the Department of Com
munity Colleges and in
the State Department.
At a very young age
Porter served on a
staff to develop the
community college
system including making
1aws, policy, and
recommendations to the
Legislature.
He has served as an
interim president for
two other community
colleges in the system.
Porter attributed
his achievements to
other college personnel
and to community sup
porters of the college.
"When I came here, I
found an outstanding
community college,
which was equal to any
college in teaching and
learning. In my opin-
i on the qual i ty has
been maintained and
perhaps enhanced."
One of Porter''s
goals was to make
decisions that reflect
ed a fairness and
consistency that would
be right for the total
col 1ege.
■ I feel this is one
of my greatest accom-
plishments, which is
real 1y ethics in
admi n i strat i on . *'
•Fol1owi ng that
principle," Porter
stated, "has helped
other employees to be
motivated to develop
the college further."
Porter said "I would
like the college to
continue to be an out
standing quality insti
tution with employees
who enjoy performing
the i r roles."
Dr. 6. Heraan Porter
He said that he
would also like to see
the college fully com
pleted and landscaped.
Porter wants to
leave both the students
and the faculty with a
chal1enge;
"I wouId like to
challenge the students
to get more involved in
student activities so
that they can know that
love, fun, power, and
freedom they need to
experience outside of
the classroom."
"To the faculty, I
chal1enge them to keep
on experiencing the
love of teaching
including its aspects
of drama and stimula
ting exchanges with
studen ts."
"My experience at
Wayne Community College
has been very pleasant
from my view point."
Porter said that
being a part of a
quality college at the
end of his career has
been the most ful
filling and exciting
experience of his
professional life.
