She married early and had to say goodbye to her young husband going off to war. To calm her nerves, she began smoking, a habit she continued throughout her life until breast cancer made her wonder about this hab i t. But no doctor said, "Stop smoking," even though 4 years later lung cancer mutilated her body. The 1 engthy scar begins below her right shoulder at her back and travels downward around to her chest, continuing halfway up her chest. I can still remember the metallic staples glinting in the light of the hospital room. Still, no doc tor said the magic words, until 5 years later severe emphysema c1 aimed her. Today a mach i ne helps her breathe, its 1ong plastic hose running from clips in her nostrils 25-30 feet to the motor that supp1 i es oxygen. She would say to all of us, "Stop smoking. Don't ever start." I think abou t this person I love, my mother-in-law, as I notice what seems to be an increase in the number of women smok i ng at WCC this quarter. In the past women have enjoyed longer lives than men, but that statistic will soon change unless we change our habits. Ye s, we've c ome a long way, Baby. But we cut that progress short if we can• t live to en.ioy it, women. 124 E. Mulberry St. Goldsboro, NC 27530 Hours^"-^19) 735-9743 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Mon.- Sat.
