NOVEMBER 20, 1991 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 9 Foundation uses western theme By BRENDA ANMAL The, Foundation at Wayne Community College started its annual -fund drive with a western theme on Monday, September 30, 1991. The "Wild, Wild West" visited WCC in the -form o-f a sk i t dur i ng wh i ch the ■faculty and sta-f-f o-f WCC had an all-out- shoot-out -bushwhack i ng- •foot-stomp i ng -fun time, according to Executive Director JoAnn Bruce. The program, chaired by Glenn Smith, and co chaired by Earl Davis and Li nda Ch i tty, heralded this year's drive which has a goal o-f *100,000. Begun with a grant in 1986, the Foundation has been raising money since 1988 to assist WCC and its students. So far, $84,696 has been contributed toward the goal, Bruce said. The Foundation hopes to exceed the goal by the end o-f the year. The WCC Foundation uses the money to recognize excellence in teaching and scholastic ability, and to help with academic needs. Each year, on Employee Appreciation Day, 3 staf-f members are awarded $500 ■for their outstanding work. To recognize -faculty, the WCC Foundation sponsors the George E. Wilson Excellence in Teaching Award, which grants a plaque and $1000 to the recipient. In addi 11 on to the awards given to the faculty and sta-f-f o-f WCC, the Foundation gives scholarships to studen ts. An n u a11y the ■foundation gives $4,000 in high school merit scholarsh i ps. It also provIdes $200 -for each o-f the 45 programs in WCC to award students in the program. New scholarships have been established by the Wayne County Dental and Medical Auxiliaries, one an endowment -for a dental scholarship and the other -for a nursing scholarsh i p. In addi t i on to awards and scholar ships, the WCC Foundat i on also provides $500 mini- grants to -faculty and sta-f-f members each quarter. The Foundation supports WCC education in ways other than scholarships awards and grants, o-f-fering educational and entertainment -for the community and •for the campus. This year the Robin '>/’oiers'’ presentation O'f "The Belle o-f Amherst" was co-sponsored by the Foundation and the Gold-Wayne English Teachers Association. The Association was established through a Foundation mini-grant, and it continues the Foundation's policy o-f supporting education. Dave Odom, the ACC coach o-f the year, came to WCC with the help o-f the Foundation. Future events include an all-day recycling e-f-fort co sponsored with the Chamber o-f Commerce and Keep Wayne County Beauti-ful Program, planned sometime in the wln ter quar ter . .In the spring quarter, the WCC Alumni Organization is co operating with the Foundation to sponsor a pi ay. Each year the Foundation sponsors the Regional High School Math Contest. The Foundation also provides the reception each year -for grad- uat i on. Ti eke ts -for the North Carolina Symphony and Center Stage Theatre productions are available to the faculty and staff of UCC. The Foundation tries to provide items needed PHOTOS; BILL BOHEH, Office of Public Information around campus by matching donors with pec i p i ents. Items include furn i ture for the Learning Center, plants in the Atrium, the T.U. in the North Campus Student Union, and the WCC Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees. Prof recalls Boyd The July issue of the Barton College Alumni magazine, the Scope. contained a tribute to retiring professor John Dunn of the Math Departmen t. Dunn, recalling ■outstanding" math students during his tenure, mentioned Shirley Raper whom Anne Blanchard knew was WCC"s vice president Qf instruction Shirley Boyd. Blanchard let the Voi ce know so that Boyd could be recognized. We are proud of you, Sh I r 1 e y!
