by the Board o-f
Trustees on Friday,
April 24.
Dr . Uli 1 son has
served as Executive
■vfice President and
Chief Administrative
Officer for the NC
Department of Community
Colleges in Raleigh
since 1983.
He served as
president of Roanoke-
Chowan Community
College frcjm 1981-83
and was an administra
tor for WCC from 1973-
81 .
Uilson completed his
doctorate in 1973 after
serving as principal of
^ex High School.
Jack Kannan,
Chairman of the Board
o4 Trustees of UCC,
stated, "Dr. Uilson is
an outstanding
cofnmunity college
administrator with
valuable experience.*
Kannan concluded,
■It is a true indicator
of excellence on the
part of UCC that we can

the Goldsboro "News-
Argus" on Tuesday, May
12, IS92, assessed
Porter's term as
president in these
words: "Herman Porter,
a master at being
effect i ve wh i 1 e
maintaining a low
profile, leaves the
college in excellent
condi t i on — in
fac i1i t i es, in
programming and in
public confidence."
The search for Uayne
Ccanmunity College's new
President, Pr. Edward
H. Uilson, began in
fall quarter, 1991.
The Board of
Trustees reviewed 71
responses; then they
narrowed that number to
54 to consider for this
pos i t i on.
Those involved in
the selection of the
college's new president
were the College
May 20,1992
Council and the Board
of Trustees comnittees,
the Screening Committee
and the Search
Commi t tee.
The Screening
Committee provided the
Search Committee with
11 candidates from the
previous 54 using
procedures set up by
the Search Committee.
The College Council
provided a list of
criteria used in the
selection of the new
presi dent.
The Search
Committee's respons
ibilities were to
advertise and seek out
candidates for the
pos i t i on.
Then they had to
recommend to the Board
of Trustees a Screen
ing Committee consist
ing of 4 faculty
members: Cindy Archie,
Annette Hawkins, Ralph
Leach, and Glenn Smith;
3 non-teaching staffi
Roy Uhite, Yvonne
Goodman, and Leo
Taswell; 2 students,
Elvira Simmons and
Debbie Clark.
This committee also
consisted of these 4
members from the
community: Reid Davis,
Plant Manager, Bussman-
Cooper Industries;
Bertha Uooten,
Foundat i on Board
member; Mabel Mozingo,
retired Uayne County
teacher; and David
Rodgers, principal of
Eastern Uayne
Elementary School.
The Search Commi ttee
also was to establish
procedures for the
Screening Committee;
establish a search
budget for approval by
the Board of Trustees;
keep the board informed
about the status of the
search; maintain
contact with the State
Department of Community
Colleges; recommend a
minimum of three
candidates to present
to the full board for
consideration and
selection; and maintain
confidentiality of
appli cants.
