10 WCC CAMPUS VOICE- MAY 20,1992 Holmes bowls ’em over By CAhfll DAW Ever wonder what instructors do in their spare time? Jim Holmes, instructor in the Criminal Justice program since 1985, spends his spare time in bowl i ng 1anes solving the mysteries of bowl i ng. He said, "I enjoy bowling because it is a family-oriented sport." A native of Wayne County, Holmes has lived in Goldsboro aM of his life. He graduated from Seven Springs High School, then from East Carolina University wi th an undergraduate degree in social work and a master's in counselor education. He previously served as a probation parole officer for the North Carolina Department of Correc t i ons. Holmes teaches approximately 150 students in the By BLAKE T. THORNTON According to English instructor Rosalyn Lomax, students can expect "Renaissance" to be published by the last week of the spring quar ter. "Renaissance," the writers'' and artists' magazIne, is in its eighth year of publi cat i on, hav i ng been established in 1985 by Engli sh Department members Bill Bennett, Liz Meador, and Marian Westbrook with the assistance of former art instructor, Anne Croom. Lomax said for the 1992 issue more students submitted writing entries than art entries, the majority of which were provided by Pat Turlington''s art students. A1though there were as many entries as last year, if not more, Lotnax encourages students to submit any art, poetry, or writing for the next issue to b* published in 1993. Criminal Justice program each quarter; of these, 108 are his adv i sees. Before coming to UCC, he served an internship at a developmental school and at 0''Berry. The Pizza Inn has been sponsoring Holmes for 17 years. As a bowler for 2 different leagues, Holmes' bowlino average is 180. He has traveled to 1arge cities like Niagara Falls, NY, and Reno, Nevada, to par t i c i pate in tournamen ts. Along with bowling. Holmes is also an American Bowling Congress Certified Lane Inspector and a Certified Bowling Coach with the Amer i can Bowling Congress. Rather than keeping the numerous trophies he has won, Holmes gives them back to the Young American Bowling A11 i ance to be re- 1abeled. The cash award winners are cover design, Kathy Mitchelle; art award, Ui11i am We i si ger ; poetry, Jessica Holden, short story, Jim Strain; and essay. Max Ri ch. The winner of the Goldsboro Writers Group award of S25 to a promising new writer is Jessica Holden. Spill from page 7 Linwood Anderson, Vice President of Educational Support Services, said WCC has been in litigation with the contractors involved since the oil sp i11 occurred. According to Anderson, attorneys from both sides are scheduled to present a proposed agreement to the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, May 19. Anderson declined to comment on details of the proposal or of the expected outcome as of press time. Once an agreement is reached, it may still take as many as 6 years to completely clean up the sp i11.
