PHOTO: Blake Thornton By BLAKE T. THORNTON The UCC "Campus Voice" recognizes the contributions of older ^ericans in May, Older Americans Month. In an o-f-ficial proclamation, Gov. James G. Martin has set aside several weeks to recognize the contri butions o-f older peopi e . He designated May 3-9 as "Senior Fitness Ueek"; May 10-May 16 as "Senior Smile Uleek," "Senior Center Ueek," and "Nursing Home Ueek"; and May 24-30 as "Older Veterans Ueek." Older people have become important in our society In recent years because o-f their growing numbers and o-f the job opportunities that come -from meeting the needs o-f such a large group o-f people. That Is where UCC's Geriatrics Technology Program comes in. Established in 1977, this program is meeting the needs of older ^ericans through the training of those who want to work with the aging, according to Dr. Edhiund Hogan, chair of the department. Barbara Porter, instructor in the program for 18 years, emphasized the importance of the contributions the program makes despite smal1 numbers of students. continued on page 20 ''I ^exxi. Thornton Despite the hard economic times and tight Job market, potential employers showed up in record numbers at the third annual Career Day held in the Atrium on the North Campus on Thursday, March 25. According to Director of the Cooperative Education and Placement Staff, Ed Kelly, the event was a big success, "certainly the biggest Career Day UCC has ever had. ■ Kelly estimated that an average of 2000 students attended between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Forty-one of the 44 companies Invited showed up, and 65 representatives were present for questioning. The booths the companies set up ranged from simple tables with brochures to elaborate state-of-the-ar t dispiays. The Uayne Ccxnmunity Col 1ege Foundat i on funded the event.
