2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE -MAY 20,1992 Farewell from Dr. Porter 1987-1992 Dr, E(^ard H. Wilson, Jr. (I) discuses college natters with current president, Dr. G. Herman Porter during an April 29 meeting. Wilson will begin offically on July 1, 1W2. PHOTO: Bill Bennett Greetings from Dr. Wilson It Is with great enthusiasm that I look ■forward to serving as president o-f Wayne Community College. On July 1, 1992, our journey as co-workers begins, and that date will represent both a homecoming and an exciting challenge. Having previously worked at WCC -from 1973 to 1981, Sue and I -feel as though we are returning home. Likewise, my employ ment with the N. C. Department o-f Community Colleges -for the past 9 years has provided many oppor tun i t i es to observe the progress that Wayne Community College has made. New instructional programs, strengthened partnerships within and beyond Wayne County, and a new campus on Uayne Memorial Drive are proud reflections of what can be accomplished when people work together to face the challenge of progress. That challenge will always be with us, for we have a reputation for quality to uphold and much remains to be done. I look forward to the opportunity to talk wi th you and have you share with me what you think are the needs of WCC. In order for us to be successful in an era of increasing enroll ments and scarce resources, we must learn to work smarter an d c orranu n I c a t e mor e effec t i ve1y. Oppor tun i t i es will be made available for you and me to discuss the issues that face the college. As an institution of quality in the system, WCC will play an in valuable role in the overal1 success of the statewide effort. WCC"s progress in completing Its campus construction program and its continuing tradition of excellence in its classrooms sets an example for other institutions to follcxij. Again, I look for ward to the challenges we will face together, and I wish to thank Dr. Porter for his assis tance in preparation for the transition wh i ch lies ahead. The cooperation, striving, and commit ment that have made WCC a first-rate institu tion are the same qualities that make North Carol Inal's community colleges among the best in the nat i on. I am proud to have the opportunity to work with students, faculty and staff of Wayne Cixnmunity College. Dr. Edward H. Wilson, Jr . With June 30, 1992, as the official date of my retirement, I wish to send a fond farewell to the entire Wayne Community College f am 11 y. I particularly wish to offer congratula tions and best wishes to two groups: the individuals who have made "The Campus V.^'oice" what it is, and those students who are among the graduating class of 1992. "The Campus Voice" has proven itself a valuable enterprise from its first Issue in May 1988; for 4 years in a row our student newspaper has provided coverage of interest and value to all who read i t. The publication has also served to reflect the high standard of quality maintained in Liz Meador's Journalism cl asses. Ongoing quality such as this requires not only top-notch Instruc tors, but also a steady supply of talented and serious students. UCC is fortunate to have both. Likewise, the graduates of the class of 1992 are themselves a reflection of their own goals and deter mination as well as our collective efforts to sustain learning. Each individual of the class of 1992 has gained valuable knowledge and benefited from a support system of others who have helped in the pursuit of education. I feel certain that my feelings are shared by the faculty, support staff, administration, and fellow students when I congratulate those who are about to graduate. During the next several weeks I will be communicating with our new president, Dr.. Edward H. Wilson, Jr., to plan for a smooth transition when he officially begins his dut i es on Jul y 1 , I am confident that Dr. Wilson will provide the leadership to ensure WCC"s continued success as an institution, and, Judging from my cx«jn experiences with the WCC family, I am sure that his term as president will be one of the highlights of his career. Best wishes to every one of you. Presl dent Move likely to be delayed The inspections were originally scheduled to take place last week but were delayed because state inspectors deemed the buildings as not one hundred percent complete. The buildings are ■essentially complete," Anderson said, with only "punchlist" items remaining, building details that the arch i tects and engineers go through, checking to see that they were constructed properly. After several years, final construction of the buildings on the new campus is almost complete. The final move to the new campus wi11 most likely take place between spring and summer quarters, though as of press time <May 15>, according to Andy Anderson, Vice President of Educa tional Services. He said furniture for classrooms and offices could start being moved as soon as the state building inspectors finish their final inspections of the new Arts and Mathematics <A it M> Building and the Mechanical and Social Science <MSS> Building. Another detail is that the heating and air conditioning system is st i11 having problems. The system runs using hot and cold water lines, continued page 19
