Foundation rewards
teacher excellence
By MIRANDA FOREHAND and
LOUISE KRIGER
Since 1986 the
Foundation of Wayne
Community College has
awarded the George E.
Wilson Excellence in
Teaching Award to 7 WCC
instructors.
Robert Krieger, the
first instructor to
receive this award and
chair of the Engineer
ing Department, has
been employed at
WCC for about 19 years.
Krieger said that he
believed his major
strength in teaching
was his concern for his
students.
"Student concern is
paramount to good
teaching."
Faye Weeks,
accounting instructor,
and 1987 winner of the
award, said, "It was
the most exciting
achievement--! thought
there had been a
mistake!"
She, like the other
recipients, was reluc
tant to speculate on

why she was chosen; she
believes many teachers
are deserving of the
recognition.
She said it is re
warding to see students
acquire a skill and
become successful in
their jobs, adding that
7 of her former
students have become
CPAs .
She looks forward to
retirement when she can
travel and engage in
missionary work.
Rosalyn Lomax,
English instructor and
co-editor of
"Renaissance," (WCC's
writers' and artists'
magazine), received the
award in 1988.
She said about
receiving the honor:
"I was so moved I was
on the verge of tears."
She felt she was
recognized because of
her obvious love for
her students and what
she teaches.
The thing she enjoys
most about teaching is
seeing her students get
excited about learning.
Allen Strohm, an
instructor at WCC for
over 28 years, said
receiving the award was
probably the "highest
high" he'd ever had.
Strohm used the
$1000 reward money for
a honeymoon since he
had recently been
married.
Rachel Hall, nursing
instructor for 20
years, received the
award in 1990.
Hall stated that all
teachers put special
effort into teaching
and that it was a great
honor for her to be
recognized.
"Motivation (for
teaching) comes from
the students them
selves," Hall said.
"This is a very
rewarding profession."
The 1991 award re
cipient was Elizabeth
Meador, English and
journalism instructor,
advisor to the WCC
"Campus Voice," and co
founder and former co
editor of "Renais
sance ."
"I was absolutely
flubbergusted," she
said, "I walked up to
receive the award in a
daze."
She bought herself a
new pair of eyeglasses
and paid bills with her
award money.
She felt as though
her revitalization of
the WCC newspaper
(abandoned for 13 years
prior), and her initi
ation of "Renaissance"
were contributing
factors in her
selection.
Meador enjoys
watching students make
discoveries, as well as
discovering things
herself through
teaching.
Doug Royal, chair of
the Science Department
and biology and micro
biology instructor, was
the most recent award
recipient, receiving
the award in May 1992.
"I was stunned--!
had no idea at all,"
he said.
He used his award
money to help pay for a
daughter's summer
tuition at Barton
Col 1ege.
Royal attributes his
selection to the nomin
ation by the fine group
of people in his
department, and to his
perseverance.
He likes teaching
because he enjoys
working with students,
getting to know them
and watching them
"blossom."
He feels the lab
experience is conducive
to knowing students on
a one-to-one basis and
for students to get to
know each other better.
