2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - NOV. 18,1992 President addresses concerns Since you asked... By DENISE DEISLER [Dr. Wilson has agreed to respond to student, faculty, and staff interests by way of the WCC Campus Voice. This column will appear in every issue of the Voice. in some cases replacing "Letter from the President." If you have concerns you'd like the President to address in the next issue, please place them in the yellow box marked "Campus Voice" in the Student Union.] WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOUR ROLE IS IN DISCIPLINE? Dr. Wilson: My primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of all faculty, staff, and students. Respecting the rights of others is essential to a good learning environment. I promote this by ensuring existing policies are enforced, providing adequate security, and supporting faculty. WHY ARE BOOKS SO EXPENSIVE IN OUR BOOKSTORE? Dr. Wilson: The bookstore operation is reviewed annually. The most recent analysis indicates our costs are at or below the average costs of other community colleges. We keep our mark ups reasonable, and profits generated are used to pay things such as bookstore employee salaries. WHY WAS THE LITERACY CENTER MOVED TO THE LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER? IS THIS TO BE THE PERMANENT LOCATION? Dr. Wilson: We had to vacate the South Campus, so the Literacy Center was moved to the upper level of the Learning Resources Center. It was really the only space available. Eventually, as new buildings are added to the campus, it will be relocated. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PROPOSED SWITCH FROM THE QUARTER SYSTEM TO THE SEMESTER SYSTEM? WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THIS PROPOSAL? Dr. Wilson: The conversion to a semester system is inevitable. I fully support it and see many benefits in it. However, Robert Scott, President of the N.C. Department of Community Colleges, has recommended the conversion be put on hold. Legislative leaders have expressed objections to the proposal believing it will move community colleges away from the technical/vocational mission. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITY PROJECTS OR MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES? Dr. Wilson: Faculty salaries are my first priority. We are conducting a study this year to determine appropriate salaries. This is essential to recruiting and retaining the best possible faculty. I am taking a look at the organizational structure also; is it responsive to the needs of faculty, staff, and students? Another area I'm concerned about is litter. We have a beautiful campus, and I would' like to see it remain this way for years to come. Seeing cigarette butts and trash thrown about is discouraging. It will take the cooperation of everyone to keep the campus clean. WOULD YOU CONSIDER DESIGNATING SMOKING AREAS OR PROHIBITING SMOKING INDOORS? Dr. Wilson: I received a similar request from the SGA. A committee is reviewing the smoking issue and will make recommendations. This information will be used to determine the campus smoking policy. WHAT IS BEING DONE TO STREAMLINE REGISTRATION PROCEDURES? Dr. Wilson: One of my priorities is to reduce lines on campus. Two committees are exploring ways to make the registration process smoother and more efficient for everyone. Some of the suggestions include open registration, early book buys, and additional computer terminals in the registration office. We are taking a look at other colleges' procedures also. My best advice for avoiding the lines is to take advantage of pre-registration. We intend to have new procedures implemented by fall quarter 1993. W?s experience our biggest problems at fall registration time. WHAT IS THE POSSIBILITY OF SWITCHING FROM PARKING STICKERS TO REARVIEW MIRROR PLACARDS LIKE THOSE USED FOR HANDICAPPED PARKING? Dr. Wilson: Parking permits are neccessary to ensure there's adequate parking for everyone. They also allow us to locate students in the event of an incident involving their vehicle such as an accident or break in. We are looking into replacing the sticker with a placard. WHAT SUBJECT DID YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING IN YOUR ACADEMIC CAREER? Dr. Wilson: I majored in social studies, and one of my favorite courses was Greek history. I was fascinated with the subject and really enjoyed the professor. WeCcome to (Dr. Wiison and fiis zoife, Sue!
