Inauguration attracts 300

Wayne Corrununity
College welcomed a new
President this fall
when Dr. Ed Wilson,
replacing the retiring
Dr. Herman Porter, was
inaugurated on
September 24, 1992.
The inauguration,
held in the courtyard
among newly constructed
buildings, was attended
by 600 community
leaders, faculty,
staff, student
representatives, and
friends and family of
Dr. Wilson.
Chaplain (Lieutenant
Colonel) Raymond Hart,
Senior Chaplain at '
Seymour Johnson Air
Force Base offered the
invocation and
benediction.
Jack E. Kannan,
Chairman of the Board
of Trustees and Donald
M. Coles, Jr.,
President of the
Student Government
Association, presented
greetings to Dr.
WiIson.
Coles said it was a
privilege to work with
Dr. Wilson because
Wilson is interested in
the students and what
they do.
Greetings came also
from Dr. Ned Sauls,
Chairman of the College
Council; Yvonne
Goodman, representing
the Administrative
Staff; and Robert W.
Scott, President of the
North Carolina Depart
ment of Community
Colleges.
Representatives from
32 colleges and commu
nity colleges attended.
Trumpeter Bill Jones
and organist Roger
Searles preformed the
Prelude, "Trumpet
Concerto in D," and the
hymn "Joyful, Joyful,
We Adore Thee." They
also performed the
processional and
recessional
accompaniment.
William F. Simpson,
Chairman of the State
Board of Community
Colleges, administered
the Oath of Office, and
Jack Kannan presented
Wilson the President's
Medallion, a symbol of
power and authority
passed on to each new
president _.
Throughout the
ceremony the speakers
conveyed pride for the
beautiful new buildings
on the campus, the
increased enrollment,
and new academic
programs in place at
WCC as the quarter
begins.
Wilson referred to a
German proverb, "If We
Rest, We Rust." He
said "We believe in
that proverb whole
heartedly, and are
committed to show no
signs of rusting."
Scott said that
Wilson's 9 years as
vice president at the
Department of Community
Colleges had left an
"imprint that time will
not quickly erode."
Dr. Wilson delivered
a speech praising the
school and the
community.
Wilson said, "We
have quality people
here. I enjoy being
here because I am in
the presence of
quality."
