10 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 19,1993 Speakers inform students about government Richard Slozak By LANELLE SUTTON American National Government (POL 251) students had several opportunities to learn more about local gov ernment from speakers this quarter. Betty Jane Turner, social sciences instructor for the course, arranged for the speakers' appearances. Richard Slozak, Goldsboro's City Manager, spoke to the class on March 19 at 10:00 a.m. Slozak shared with the students his duties: to oversee the daily activities of city government, carry out city policies, enforce State and Federal laws, and recommend changes to the City Council. Slozak has held the City Manager position for 8 years after having been Assistant Manager for 8 years. He said anyone concerned with issues about Goldsboro may contact the City Council by calling 7 35- 6121. REX HAMMOND President of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, Rex Hammond spoke to the class on March 26. The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce is an interest group made up of ♦he small businejs sector. Anyone interested in WAYCO-M-PAC can go to the monthly meetings on the second Thursdays at 1:00 pm at Caroline's Restaurant. CAROLYN RUSSELL Carolyn Russell, the representative from the 77th district in the House of North Carolina Legislative Branch spoke on April 19. Russell is presently serving the third year of her second term of office, having been elected in 1990. She represents parts of Wayne, Greene, and Lenoir Counties, about 55,000 people. She is on several sub-committees includ ing State Govern ment and Public Employees. Russell is serving on the Women's and Businesses Caucuses. She has the opportunity to work towards getting bills passed that will benefit the counties she serves by attending long sessions and short sessions in Congress. Russell earns $92.00 per day while in session and $13,000 a year. Russell suggested students that would like to be involved in politics should consider being a representative of their district. She said being a representative gives caring citizens an opportunity to improve their community. Milas Keily Rex hiammond i His organization is ' involved with facilita ting a strategic plan of future growth, i promoting educational excellence in Wayne County Schools, and creating a strategic plan for travel and tourism development in Wayne County. The group also promotes unity and communication through the creation of a county intergovern mental committee, and through completing the Wayne Community Foundation fund drive. MILAS KELLY Milas D. Kelly, Jr., Chairman of the Wayne County Minority Political Action Committee (WAYCO-M-PAC) spoke to the class on April 8. Kelly said, "The political process can not solve our problems. It is a tool where elected officials can help to improve the quality of life." Carolyn Russell WAYCO-M-PAC is a non-partisan organ ization that works towards educating and encouraging people to be involved in the voting process, organizing forums, sponsoring Get Out To Vote Activities (GOTV), and supporting candi dates that share their political viewpoints.
