MAY 18, 1994 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 15
Program allows students to accelerate
By ROBIN STILWELL and
LEAH STEWART
What is Jump Start?
It is a program which
allows Southern Wayne
High School (SWHS)
students to begin their
college education
early, according to
Curtis Shivar, Dean of
Curriculum at WCC.
Dr. George
Seagroves, principal of
SWHS, and David Price,
guidance counselor,
began Jump Start in the
winter quarter 1993-94.
The program
currently involves 26
students from SWHS.
In the winter
quarter, 2 WCC
instructors--Liz Meador
and Ray Brown--
traveled to SWHS to
teach English 151 and
Psychology 151,
respectively.
Requirements for
this program include: a
senior requiring only
twelfth grade English
for graduation, a C+
average, a 94%
attendance record, and
good conduct.
This year's program
of Jump Start has been
successful enough that
Eastern Wayne High
School (EWHS) will join
the program'next year.
Price said.
Jump Start students
said they are very glad
to be in the program.
"I like the atmosphere
of a college campus,"
said Jamain Persad.
Catina Thomason,
another student said,
"I get college credits
early."
Jump Start received
130 applications for
next year and accepted
74 for the 1994-95
school year, according
to Price.
Jump Start student
Keith King said to
those interested in the
program "You have to
take it seriously."
Price said he feels
"this program is a big
step towards the
academic future for
high school students."
