Humanities 101 The course tries to increase' students* awareness of the importance of tech nological change in our society, according to Kathryn Spicer, instructor. Students mostly learn from an out-of- the-class-room view, Spicer said. In addition to class attendance and participation, students can choose from 26 tasks for their writing projects. Students make many field trips to sites where technology has demanded change. On April 12, 1995, Spicer and her class took a trip to Borden Manufacturing, which has been in business for 95 years. The class saw how cotton was processed and developed into different yarns for the making of shirts and other clothing. Leslie Payne, the manager of Borden Manufacturing, and 4 supervisors--Danny Blizzard, Royce Lewis, Russell Sherman, and Benny Sullivan—led the tours. MAY 17. 1995 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 13 from page 12 Payne explained that technology had reduced the need for manual labor, allowing work to be more proficient. He said machines have cut the number of employees in the last 10 years from 450 to 234. Borden employees must have a high school diploma and at least a two-year Associate degree. Specialized degrees in computers or robots are valuable also in the working of the machines, some of which have computerized robotic parts. WCC students have found employment at Borden. Students have also visited the Goldsboro Art Center, Wayne Memorial Hospital, the Goldsboro Fire-Police complex, the new jail, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, and First Presbyterian Church for an organ demonstration by Roger Searles. Marian Westbrook, Humanities instructor, said guest lecturers from the community have enhanced the course too.
