2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 17, 1995
Since you asked.
By CATHERINE GERRINGER
In an interview, WCC
President Dr. Edward H.
Wilson, Jr. responded
to the questions and
concerns that follow.
VOICE:
A student asked why
the transfer process
from a university to a
community cbllege is so
difficult, and why WCC
doesn’t accept all the
credits the student
transfers.
DR. WILSON: Students
need to check with the
Admissions and Records
office, but it depends
on what the course is
and whether that course
applies to the degree
we offer.
VOICE: When will
students have access to
Internet?
DR. WILSON: I think
some students in
certain programs
already have access
like the Business
Department; we * re
working on getting more
access for students,
but I'm not sure when
that will be, maybe
this coming year.
VOICE: When will the
college be switching
from quarter to
semester hours?
DR. WILSON: The
proposal says the fall
of 1997.

VOICE: What is your
reaction to the exit
interview from the
Reaffirmation
Committee?
DR. WILSON: I really
can't comment too much
on it because we are
told by the Southern
Association that the
only comments about our
status have to be made
by them in Atlanta.
We got 18 recommen
dations which is a very
small number, and we
have to respond to
those by Sept. 13, and
then if the Visiting
Team chair approves our
recommendations they go
to the Southern
Association for their
review.
We find out in
December whether our
accreditation is
reaffirmed. I'm very
optimistic that
everything will be all
right. We did receive
10 suggestions that we
don't have to respond
to, and 2 commenda
tions, which is very
unusual.
VOICE: When the report
shows a new
recommendation, what
does that mean?
DR. WILSON: That means
it's a recommendation
by the Visiting Team
that we did not already
have in our own Self-
Study. The other
recommendations were
ones we made ourselves.
VOICE: Do we have to
follow through with the
new recommendations?
DR. WILSON: Oh, yeah.
We have to follow
through with all the
recommendations whether
they are ours or
theirs.
SACS visit from page 1
According to George
Fouts, Vice President
for Academic Affairs,
the average number of
recommendations
community colleges in
North Carolina receive
as a result of self-
study is 25.
After 3 days. Dr.
Richard Federinko, the
Chair, read the team's
evaluation at the exit
meeting in the Lecture
Hal 1 to a crowd of
about 100 faculty and
staff.
The results of the
report were that Wayne
Community College
received 18
recommendations, 10
suggestions, and 2
commendations.
According to the
reaffirmation
committee's Exit
Interview, the Self-
Study was a "minimally
acceptable effort" and
"yielded limited
beneficial results."
They noted that it
was "lacking in
evidence" and showed a
"lack of documentation
and analysis."
Fouts said the^ next
step in the evaluation
process is to respond
to the committee's
recommendations by
September 13.
According to WCC
President Dr. Ed
Wilson, Jr., the
visiting team Chair has
to approve the
responses before they
are sent to the
Southern Association
for review,
WCC will be informed
in December about its
renewal of accredita
tion.

VOICE: What do you
think is WCC's greatest
weakness?
DR. WILSON: Good
question. Probably the
lack of resources
necessary for us to pay
the type of salaries we
need to pay for our
faculty and to offer
the different kinds of
programs we need to
offer in our area.
VOICE: What do you
think is WCC greatest
strength?
DR. WILSON: I think
the quality of the
faculty that we have
and the quality of the
programs we offer to
our students is our
greatest strength.
VOICE: Why are more
students not aware of
the SGA, what it stands
for, and how it affects
WCC students?
DR. WILSON: I do not
have a clue to the
answer to that
question.
I don't know what
else we can do. I think
they have tried to
publicize events. The
information is in the
Student Handbook that
everybody gets, and
information is put in
the weekly bulletin.
I think it's
primarily a factor that
our students are older
for the most part, two-
thirds of them work
regularly; they come to
school to get their
course work and then
they go on to work.
I think our SGA has
done a really good job
this year trying to
involve students in
various aspects of this
school.

She abandoned her
original intention to
teach and became
interested in jobs in
the outdoors. Someone
in the State Department
of Parks and Recreation
recommended WCC's
program for a degree in
parks.
Stell is single.
She stated that her
platform "will be one
of equity and fair-play
for all students."
