2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - NOV. 10, 1995 Since you asked. By RHETT GREEN VOICE: How is WCC effecting the change from quarters to semesters? WILSON: The courses are being redesigned, and the faculty will decide what the curriculum will be for their particular subjects. Of course, the class hours will change. What are now 5 quarter hour classes will become 3 semester hour classes. There will be a meeting concerning the change from quarters to semesters on Nov. 1 at Johnston Tech. We will have to change the student record systems in the business offices so we can bill the students for the number of semester hours they’re taking instead of quarter hours. VOICE; When will the change from quarters to semesters occur? WILSON: The semester system is scheduled to begin in the fall of 1997. VOICE: What is the status of the evaluation from the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and what steps still need to be taken? WILSON: A committee that was part of SACS called the Criteria and Reports Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools reviewed the self-study that we (WCC) did, the visiting committee’s recommendations, and wee’s response to the recommendations. If WCC gets called before December 12, 1995, then we will have to go discuss our response to the recommendations with the committee, but I don't anticipate that at all because we have met all the criteria of the committee. VOICE; How much did it cost the college when the SACS visiting committee came? WILSON: It cost about $25,000. VOICE: Prom the time the SACS committee made its visit in April until now, was WCC unaccredited? WILSON; No. Our accreditation lasts until December of this year, which is when we are going to find out if we are reaffirmed based on our response to the visiting committee's recommendations. We are visited and studied every 10 years, as are all the other colleges and schools which are a part of SACS. VOICE; Are there other buildings planned to be built in the future of WCC? WILSON: We have a master plan developed for the college through the year 2015. The plan contains 4 new buildings plus a child care center. After the 2 buildings being built now are completed, those should cover us for a few years as far as room for regular classes. The next building that is built will be for continuing education and business and industry training. VOICE: Is the college going to be hiring any new counselors in the immediate future? WILSON; No, not that I know of. I would like to have some additional counselors to help guide students' academic careers and also to help with the admissions process. However, the counselors we have are good and they work hard at it. VOICE: Why doesn’t the college have enough money to play intercollegiate sports anymore? WILSON: That money comes out of student activity fees. In the spring of 1995 the SGA decided that they couldn’t afford the $9,000 out of their $56 - 57,000 budget to have volleyball, softball, tennis, golf, and basketball teams. The fact that we do not have our own gym for basketball was a problem that factored into that decision. I'm disappointed we had to drop all sports because I love sports. All of the teams represented the college very well. #1 % 1 President lllson annonnces PooBdatioQ scholarship recipients while aibassadars vait to escort. PBOTO: STAFF Basketball was the sport we have had the longest. We had golf only the last few years, and volleyball, tennis, and softball were off and on for only a few years. WILSON: One thing I want to say is that the students seem to be keeping the campus cleaner this year than in years past, and I appreciate that.
