King celebration emphasizes optimism

"It may look as if
we're not going to get
there, but if we keep
going, we will get
there."
Those were the
motivating words of Dr.
Freddie I. Barnes,
pastor of First African
Baptist Church of
Goldsboro, the keynote
speaker during a
memorial tribute to
Martin Luther King,
Jr., held in the WCC
Lecture HaJl on
Thursday, January 16.
The more than 100
members of the audience
consisted of WCC
faculty, staff ,
students, and members
of the community.
Reggie Swinson, WCC
and Mt. Olive College
business student,
served as emcee for the
event .
The program began
with a solo from
Octavia Armond, MCAE
member, who sang "Lift
Every Voice and Sing."
Marilyn Ward, Vice
President of MCAE,
welcomed the audience.
After a solo from
WCC student Veronica
George, David Rogers of
the Community Relations
Committee introduced
the speaker .
Barnes achieved a
doctorate at United
Theological Seminary in
Dayton, Ohio.
During his speech
Dr. Barnes said, "Who
would have thought that
34 years after Dr.
King's historic 'l Have
A Dream' speech the
U.S. child poverty rate
would be more than 2
and 3 times as high for
blacks and Hispanics as
it is for whites?
"And the social
theorists are
predicting these rates
becoming much higher
when the fallout of the
Welfare Reform
legislation catches up
with the paper it's
wr i 11 en on .
"Also who would have
thought that the
leading cause of death
for young black males
would be homicide?
"And that America
would have more persons
incarcerated (better
than one million
people) than the rest
of the industrialized
world? Many of those
incarcerated are black,
brown, and poor.".
