Ward honored as Distinguished Woman MAY 14. 1997 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 3 Marilyn Ward By JULIE HEATH A second-year WCC student, Marilyn Ward, was recently nominated for Distinguished Women of North Carolina. Ward received a letter confirming her nomination on February 23, 1997, after she had been nominated by her daughter, Dorris, a student at UNC- Charlotte. The nomination went to only about 80 women throughout North Carolina. The presentation of awards took place March 17, 1997, at the North Raleigh Hilton. Ward has been very active at WCC serving as vice president of both Phi Theta Kappa and MCAE. She is an SGA Representative, an Ambassador, a peer tutor, and a member of the Marketing Committee. Awards are a habit with Ward: she is a Who’s Who Among Wayne Community College Students and a USA Today Student of Community Colleges. Active in the community and her church, she has been a 4-H leader for 10 years, and she is a Minister at Tabernacle Prayer. She is also a member of the Prison Team, the Coordinator for Single Ministry, and the Coordinator for Foreign Missions. She is a graduate of Tabernacle Bible Institute, a One-on- One Big Sister, and a volunteer for The Literacy Program. Ward received the Tracy Calhoon Award for Bus Drivers (the highest awarded given to Wayne County bus drivers) and the 1991 Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Martin. Ward's proudest accomplishment is that of being mother to 3 children, one currently at UNC Charlotte, one in the US Air Force in New Mexico, and the youngest, a ninth grader, at Goldsboro High School. Ward always gives all the credit for her accomplishments to God. She said, "I love WCC and hate to leave, but I know I must go on to bigger and better things." She has been touched deeply by faculty here at WCC who have inspired her to go forward and strive .to be her best. Rosaljm Lomax (standing) and Kathrjm Spicer, editors of ’’Renaissance," select entries for the 13th issue. "Renaissance" ready for distribution By JOHNNIE BEST The showcase for Wayne Community College's writers and artists will be released this month in the form of Renaissance magazine. The 13th annual Renaissance will be available on Friday, the 16th of May according to Rosalyn Lomax, editor along with Katherine Spicer and Marian Westbrook, all of the Liberal Arts Division. It contains various selections of poetry, stories, essays, and artwork created by students, staff, and faculty members of Wayne Community College. This year's award winning writers and artists will receive $25.00 at wee’s Dining Hall on Friday, May 16th. Award winning categories include the Cover Award, Short Story Award, Art Award, Poetry Award, Essay Award, and Best All Around Editor's Award. The WCC Foundation funds the effort. The editors received entries throughout the year for the 13th edition. They are already accepting entries now for the upcoming issue due out next year. While the editors work hard on putting the magazine together, Lomax insists that without the work of' Grace Lutz in the Media Production Department and Ruth Bailey in the Print Shop, the magazine wouldn't be a reality. Lutz said, "It is my favorite project of the year. When I finally get to it, it relaxes me. It's the only project that I actually read while I work on it!" While 44 students were published this year, only 7 faculty members contributed to the issue. ”We wish that more faculty and staff would submit entries for the magazine, but we want the main emphasis on the work of the students." says Lomax. John Barnett of Richmond, VA, .captured the comet Hale-Bopp on March 27, 1997 at 8:30 p.m. using a 50mm lens and a 6 minute exposure. WCC students, faculty, and staff followed the comet’s progress as it adorned the winter night skies.
