The group met in A&M 124-125 to provide community and institutional input about where WCC needs to be in 10 years from technological, social, structural, and economic standpoints. According to Bill Thompson, Director of Planning and Research for 7 years, this process allows the "stakeholders” to share their ideas about WCC. Thompson said, "We looked at WCC's past and present to formulate some ideas or visionary statements that will later be translated into goals or obj ectives." Thompson also stated, "The information will be used by the Planning Council to review WCC's mission statement and long range goals to be implemented in Fall 1999." WCC is the first community college in NC to institute this process. Thompson said, "We thought it was appropriate to include it as part of our 40th celebration." Tim Haithcock, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, came up with the Future Search concept. Future Search provided an opportunity for a diverse cross section of people from different geograpical areas of the county to meet. Representatives included public school officals, representa tives from business and industry, and WCC administrators. Of the 280 names suggested for the survey, 80 people from the community were selected. Participants discussed the influence of WCC's past, shared their perceptions regarding present developments, and suggested visionary statements that eventually will be incorporated into mission statements.
