Writers, artists recognized at reception

The 14th issue of
"Renaissance," WCC's
artists' and writers'
magazine, was
distributed on Friday,
May 1, at a reception
that recognized award-
winning contributors.
Editors Rosalyn
Lomax, Kathryn Spicer,
and Marian Westbrook—
all English instructors
in the Liberal Arts
Division, presented
monetary awards to the
following:

Back Cover Design and
Ed itor s' Award
Sarah Fordham
Art
Jody Fulghum and
Nicholas Millner
Poetry
Angela Aguigui and
Ginger Shelton
Short Story
Katrina Schofill
Essay
John Fizer.
According to Lomax,
the 1998 "Renaissance”
is dedicated to Grace
Lutz, Media Technician,
who has set the text
and assisted with
layout since the
magazine's inception.
The dedicatory
inscription reads, ”For
her expertise in
computer technology,
for her embracing of
'Renaissance' as her
favorite assignment,
for her willingness
even in the busiest
season, for her
patience under pressure
and her grace under
fire, for being our
saving grace and for
her sense of humor that
allows the editors to
remain in Grace's good
graces.”
The magazine's final
page recognizes the 14-
year editorship of
retiring instructor
Marian Westbrook,
herself a poet and
essayist.
She acquires the
title Editor Emeritus
to honor her editorial
excellence.
The print Shop is
preparing 1200 copies
of the magazine,
according to Ruth
Bailey, Technician.
Well done,
writers and
artists!
Former student wins
essay contest

The winners of the
essay contest WCC
sponsored in
celebration of the
institution's 40th
anniversary celebration
were announced on
April 2, 1998,
according to Bill
Bennett, WCC's Public
Information Officer/
English instructor.
First prize, $300,
was awarded to Louise
Kriger, a 1993 graduate
of WCC; second prize,
$150, went to Roderick
Thompson, currently
enrolled in Electronics
Engineering Technology,
and third prize, $50,
went to Carol WaSrner, a
WCC college transfer
student.
Fifteen others
received honorable
mention.
The theme essayists
addressed was "What WCC
Has Done for Me."
Bennett said
choosing a winner was
difficult for the 5
judges including him
self, Shelboni Daye,
Special Populations/
SGA; Beth Jones,
Coord inator/ Student
Activities; Stephanie
Hunt, TLC Lead
Instructor/Basic
Skills; and Wayne
Parsons, SGA President.
The essays needed to
be 500 words or fewer.
Judging was based on
adherence to theme,
human interest appeal,
and effective writing
style.

What Wayne Community College Has Done for Me.
Ever since I was old enough to cradle a doll I have
dreamed of growing up and becoming a wife and mother,
and was never daunted by question, "And what else?"
Since I had no plans of sacrificing time with my
children, and because I love kids, teaching seem^ a
logical solution. I chose to attend Wasme Community
College (WCC) because of its close proximity and
affordability.
Little did I know the irony of where it would lead me, or
of the complete success 1 would enjoy. I entered WCC in
1990 feeling like an alien, but it did not take long to
become more like a kid in a candy store.
My teachers were so precious to my experience! Like
the facets of a diamond, each reflected light differently,
yet they all worked together to make me shine.
Together, my teachers lifted me up to the stage where,
in 1993,1 graduated with a 4.0 average! I could have
transferred on scholarship. But where did I go?
I went home again truly to "hang my heart." I had
learned that I was already doing what I so wanted to do
with my life; only now a richer person, I could do it
better.
WCC provided me with the opportunity to grow and to
respect and believe in my own choices. My experience has
given me the confidence and conviction to say "I don't
need to become somebody. .. I already am!"
