MAY 1. 1998 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 11 Performers offer lively musical feast By JAMES ARTIS and MEGAN NICHOLS "Music is the universal language everyone understands." Those lyrics filled the Lecture Hall on Thursday, April 23, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. at the Liberal Arts Division's Spring Music Concert with 55 students from WCC and 2 students from Johnston Community College participating. Directing the concert were Marshalle Lewis, coordinator for the Associate in Fine Arts degree, and Jane Gibson, choral director. The Band played the following selections: "His Honor," "Bach Air," "Mack The Knife,?' "Pachelbel's Canon," and a version of the hymn "Blessed Assurance," with Clifton Cuddington and Vicki Ellis as soloists. The band accompanied Judy Lewis, guest soloist, as she sang, "Someone To Watch Over Me." The band's final selection was "Holy, Holy, Holy," which Lewis said the band will perform at graduation. The Recorder Ensemble began with "The Ash Grove." Before the next number, Gibson explained to the audience that this song, "La Bamba," was a variation of the original composition. Gibson said that as they practiced the piece, students showed her ways to make the arrangement more exciting. The last number by the Recorder Ensemble, was "My Heart Will Go On,” the theme from the film "Titanic." Accompanists for the Recorder Ensemble were Lisa Hill (piano), Issac Bruton (keyboard), and Bryan Gooding (drums). The next 2 songs were "This Day of Joyful Pleasure" and "The Love of a Song." The Men's Ensemble performed "The Terrible Tale of Tom Gilligan," a novelty narrative song that Included whistling.^nd clapping. The Chorus began with "African Psalm" with percussionists Bryan Gooding, Issac Bruton, and James Wade. The Ladies' Ensemble performed "The Rattlin' Bog," a song that depended on fast rhythms and repetitive lyrics. "Swingin' With the Saints," was a bluesy version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Accompanying tht Chorus were Chester Davis on the bass guitar and Bryan Gooding on percussion.
