12 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 1, 1998 NC LIVE comes to WCC By MEGAN NICHOLS From folklore to weatherwise, from religious studies to adolescence, NC LIVE is the "Library link to the world.” NC Live stands for North Carolina Libraries for Education. It accesses thousands of resources not accessible to Internet users. In a presentation to 2 technical writing classes on Wednesday, April 27, Dot Elledge explained how NC LIVE assists students with research. The Community College System along with the University system, several private colleges, and public libraries all over the state combined efforts and paid millions to get this extension of the Internet, said Elledge. : Only 3 stations in the WCC Library have access to NC LIVE at present, and Elledge said that 3 are already not enough. While students can not have access to NC LIVE on personal computers, 186 libraries all over the state do have access. According to Elledge, NC LIVE offers authoritative, scholarly information unlike the Internet which sometimes 'accesses unaccredited sources. Using NC LIVE is not as risky as using the Internet, she said, because the information has been approved for publication in a scholarly journal. NC LIVE has entire articles from many magazines, national and local newspapers, professional and business journals, and research articles and publications. How did WCC get involved in NC LIVE? All the community colleges in the state now have NC, LIVE, Elledge said. NC LIVE is funded by an appropriation from the NC General Assembly and North Carolina's independent colleges and universities. Students browse the Internet or use NC LIVE resources for research at the 3 stations in the Library. Horton's letter of intent stresses the importance of a dependable voice at WCC. She promises to be that voice as president. Conner, elected vice president, is in her second semester at WCC. She said she wants to be an active part of the school and thinks that being vice president will achieve that goal for her. Evans, secretary, brings lots of experience in secretarial work, such as being employed in the Writing Center, doing secretarial work at the Herman Park Center, and being a data clerk at the military school for Automotive Logistical Specialists. NNew Public Information Officer Corbitt said he thinks he works extremely well with the public. This year he served as Local Interactions chairman. While in office he was chairman of the Ms. WCC Pageant. He went into the community to collect donations from businesses that donated gifts and prizes for the event. Corbitt said, "I want to keep students informed of events and issues and continue to link students with the community.” Stogdale, Local Interactions officer of the SGA, believes she is qualified for the office because of her involvement with the Ambassadors' Program, her dedication to her daughter's softball team, and her interest in volunteer work. Jones said the new officers will receive training for their jobs sometime in June. ♦ ♦* * ■ ^ I wc"s"ff” I I Students with ID's j 115% discount on any service I I Rides to and from sciiooi I 7^ rAaer.nax rats ttoomnia 150% CASH BACK GUARANTEE We'U refund 150% the difference in price if your tire is advertised for less llATIONWmS aoAMAimxa by a local competitor within 30 dajrs of your purchase.
