2 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - October 20, 1998 Because uou asked, . Dr. Edward H. PHOTO: CASIE DANIELS By JUSTIN POPE [Note; The student interview with the President of WCC, Dr. Edward*H. Wilsdn/Jf-/ is a regular feature of the VOICE.] VOICE: What has accounted for WCC's enrollment increase? WILSON: That would be hard to say. I do not have the final statistics for that, but base enrollment is up and so is JumpStart. VOICE: With enrollment up, has staff increased? WILSON: We are currently increasing our faculty by small numbers., and we are in the process of adding a counselor. VOICE: What are the plans for the college over the next few years, as far as expansion goes? WILSON: Well, as everyone knows, we are building the new entrance on New Hope Road. There will also be an additional parking lot added to that area. We also plan in the distant future to build our student activity center which will move the Student Lounge and make room in the Learning Center building for a larger bookstore. This is our main priority, but there is currently no funding for the project. VOICE: After Hurricane Bonnie, several students complained about WCC's inclement weather policy. Why does the college wait so long to let students know of closings? WILSON: I will say that we let the television stations know as soon as possible. The decisions are made as quickly as possible. Either way, state laws force community colleges to make up the days. The CAMPUS VOICE expresses its deepest condolences to Dr. Wilson and his family during the illness and loss of his father. New road to be ready by mid-April Since returning to school in mid- August, many students have noticed that WCC has been undergoing construction. According to Linwood Anderson, Vice Presi dent for Educational Support Services, 2 projects will improve access to the campus: the new road which will serve as an entrance from New Hope Road and a redesigned North entrance with a third lane. If weather causes no delays, the new road should be completed by mid-April 1999, Anderson said. "Fortunately, good weather has allowed construction workers the chance to get ahead so that the new road might be completed earlier," he said. Anderson said that the realization of the new road has been a part of the WCC master plan for years, but the college has had to wait for funding from the state. In addition to the new road, the college has purchased land all the way to New Hope Road for future buildings for WCC. The road was originally scheduled to begin in the spring of 1997, but state approval along with other problems slowed down the project to early last summer. The total cost of the road project is $777,395. Construction work for these projects is being done by Whitfield Enterprises and Big John's Electric Company.
