Dental hygiene student selected Miss WCC

Kiinberly Hatfield
was crowned Miss WCC on
March 27, 1999, in the
school's Lecture Hall
before an audience of
about 3 00 people.
The Student
Government Association
(SGA) sponsored the
event.
The theme for this
year's pageant was "A
Celebration of Women."
Contestants and
their majors included
Kimberly Hatfield,
associate in science;
Truphenia Michelle
Kelley, dental hygiene;
Felicia Bond, human
services technology.
Also Melissa
Garrison, medical
assisting; Brandi
Bedford, nursing;
Tammy Evans, legal
secretary; Tivette
Davis, nursing; Brandi
Wade, social work; and
Heather Dills,
associate in science.
To be eligible for
Miss WCC, students
filled out an
application and
attended interviews and
workshops.
They also upheld all
regulations and
standards the SGA has
established, according
to Shelboni Daye,
coordinator for the
event.
Judges held
interviews with the
contestants before the
pageant began.
Judges included
Elizabeth Barnes of the
City of Goldsboro; Bill
Barnes with Hamilton
Funeral Home; Stephen
Johnson, Student
Government President,
Coastal Carolina
Community College; and
Davina Roberts, manager
of The Bath and Body
Shop.
Arcina Dixon served
as Pageant Auditor.
Contestants modeled
active wear, career
wear, and evening wear
along with performing
their talents.
Hatfield sang "Can't
Help Loving That.Man.of
Mine" for the talent
portion of the pageant.
As Miss WCC,
Hatfield must visit one
high school per
semester to help with
recruitment and attend
an SGA Conference.
She must also keep a
scrapbook of her reign
as Miss WCC.
Bill Bennett,
English instructor,
served as master of
ceremonies, and
students Cheyenne
Corbitt and Antoinne
Darring managed lights
and sound.

Three named Employees-of-theYear

During the WCC
Christmas party for all
employees, 3 staff
members were recognized
for their hard work by
being named Employees-
of-the-Year, each
receiving a $500 check
which the Foundation of
WCC provided and a
plaque.
Curtis Shivar,
Assistant Vice
President of Academic
Affairs; Frances Allen,
Secretary to Curtis
Shivar; and Melvin
Boykin, Groundskeeper;
have a combined service
to WCC of 65 years.
The 3 were nominated
for the honor by their
peers. Then an off-
campus committee
reviewed the nomination
forms and selected the.
prize winners.
Frances Allen said,
"Special thanks to the
Foundation and to WCC
for establishing a way
to recognize and
congratulate
employees."
President Edward H.
Wilson, Jr. announced
the recipients and
Jimmie Edmundson
presented the checks
and plaques.
