16 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 3. 1999 Students, instructor respond to dissection alternatives By AMANDA DURHAM Instructors in the Science Department have responded to a student complaint about the dissection policy. Douglas Royal, Department Head, said that the dissection policy at WCC will not change. If a student has a legitimate complaint or religious objection to dissection, the department offers an equal but fair alternative to dissecting. Regarding the concern for animal rights and the dissection of animals for the advancement of science. Royal said that the animals were not killed for purposes of dissection. Rather, they are the off- products of natural morbidity. He s^id the fetal pigs used for dissection are runts of the litter that did not live during birth. Other WCC students had varying responses to the issue. Allison Kennedy, Associate in Arts college transfer student said that if she needed surgery, she would not want a doctor who had watched only videos of procedures. "I would want a doctor who had hands-on experience and knew what she was doing." Suellen Neas, also an Associate in Arts major, stated that if the animals are already deceased, then they feel no pain and there is nothing wrong with learning through hands- on experience. As for the cost of the animals to dissect. Royal said that not much of the budget is used for these animals.
