SGA introduces new activities, undergoes change

The Student Government
Association has forged ahead with
activities in the spring semester
despite changes in leadership,
according to Rosa Nilssen,
President, who replaced Sharon
Simmons who resigned the
position in March for personal
reasons.
On Friday, March 24, 2000,
SGA delegates left for the NC
Comprehensive Community
College Student Government
Association (N4CSGA) State
. Conference held at the Sheraton
Hotel in the Research Triangle
Park, Raleigh.
According to Director, of
Student Activities Wayne Parson,
the conference theme this year
was “Spring into 2000."
About 400 delegates from the
59 colleges in the community
college system attend the
conference.
Representing WCC were SGA
officers Rosa Nilssen, president,
and Angela Hudson, secretary.
Other attendees included Human
Services majors Wanda Thomas
and Tiwana Mosley, business
major Ginger Devbre-all
prospective candidates for SGA
offices—and SGA co-advisers
Wayne Parson and Dwight
Morrisey, instructor in the
Criminal Justice program.
Thomas crocheted 2 afghans in
blue and gold, the school colors,
for display at N4CSGA.
The afghans will be door prizes
at the annual Spring Fling held on
campus April 18.
Primary issues and concerns at
this year’s conference included
dress codes, the use of SGA
funds, and the national
conference.
Other SGA activities in the
spring semester included a cook-in
on February 10 and Ping Pong,
Golf, and Pool Tournaments.
First place winner in Ping Pong
both fall and spring was Vu
Nguyen with Josh Whitfield in
second place.
First and second place winners
in the Pool Tournament were
Robert Wiggins and Mike
McKenna.
At the Golf Tournament held on
Tuesday, April 11, at Lane Tree
Golf Course first place winner,
first flight was Wade Faircloth,
and Greg Thomas, first place,
second flight.
On Friday, March 31, at
Wellness Day, SGA
representatives weighed students
in the medical room behind the
Student Activities Office.
SGA holds annual elections for
new officers each spring.
Candidates Ginger Devore,
running for president; Tiwana
Mosley, for vice president; and
Wanda Thomas, secretary,
delivered their speeches to the
student body on April 18 at the
Spring Fling Festival.
