When Lampson entered her art work, she was hoping that one or both of her drawings would be chosen for exhibition. Juror Lynn Marsden-Atlass of the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA, did more than that. She named Lampson’s “Hanging Towel” the Best in Wayne County. Marsden-Atlass said that she was impressed by the “beautiful attention to light, shadow and folds. The artist has done a very lovely rendering of an everyday object.” “Hanging Towel,” a graphite and charcoal piece, was drawn on tinted paper. The drapery was highlighted with white chalk. The drawing was created by setting up the drapery and photographing it. Lampson then used an enlarging method called “squaring up.” Lampson’s other drawing was a still life. Lampson earned an associate of fine arts degree in August 1999. She is currently assisting Pat Turlington, art instructor at WCC. Lampson plans to enroll in college and earn a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art. Her fijture plans are to pursue a master’s degree in fine arts and to teach studio art at the college level. Another WCC student, Ty Higgins, had a work accepted into the show. The 4-inch tall clay sculpture entitled “Tribal”depicts a head of tribe member. George shares canine thoughts about college life George and Kilo play in the hall between classes. PHOTO: ASHLIE BARNES By ASHLIE BARNES Hello, WCC students and staff! My name is George, and I am a “Goldador,” golden and Labrador retriever mix, but I am no ordinary canine. I am a Southeastern guide dog, and I’ve dedicated my life to helping my best friend. Kilo Cook. Kilo is a history major at WCC. I go to all of his classes with him because I’m such a special dog. All the teachers are nice to me, but I stay really quiet just in case! I like going to school because it gives me lots of time to sleep, except for Music Appreciation; They make too much noise in there! I remember the day I met Kilo, on June 4th, about 3 years ago in Sarasota, Florida, where I was born, though I grew up and was trained in Texas. When Kilo and I met, first everyone had to make sure we got along, never a problem. Then we had to get used to each other’s walking pace. I like to run, but Kilo usually makes me slow down. We practiced using public transportation like cars and buses. Then we tried elevators and escalators. One of the most important things I learned was how to go into a restaurant and resist the temptation to eat everybody’s food. Now Kilo and I live happily together. On a typical weekday we wake up around 5:00 a.m. Kilo fixes me breakfast, and we go outside for a walk. After Kilo is ready, he puts me in my harness, and we wait for our ride. continued p. 22 EL-BETHEL ASSEMBLY Steve Holder Pastor Service Times SS 9:45 Service 10:30 Kid Church 10:30 Wed. 7:30 Phone (919) 734-2330 Fax (919) 734-2520 Email: eba2@email.msn.com 2308 N.
