Day Care provides students with hands-on experience APRIL 26. 2000 - WCC CAMPUS VOICE 19 IS A STAR Students in Jeannine Taylor's Children’s Literature course examine books for content and condition at the Day Care. By LESLIE LANE The Wayne Community College Daycare provides students in the Early Childhood Development program with a hands-on laboratory experience, according to Sherry Granberry, instructor in the Early Childhood Development program. PHOTO: KELLY LITTLE According to Granberry, topics discussed in lecture are reinforced in the daycare setting. For example, the students may discuss multi cultural children’s literature in class, and then read some of that literature to the children in the daycare. Student numbers in the Early Childhood Development program include 3 students in the curriculum planning class, 15-17 in the children’s literature class, 25-27 students in the night classes, and 10-12 in the child development class, according to Granberry. Most of these classes require first-hand observations at the Daycare. The Daycare, open from 6:30 a.m. to 5;30 p.m., has been available since March 1998. The cost is $72 per week, but the fees may change soon. The Daycare staff consists of Sharon Foil, director, and 3 full time and 2 part-time employees. The Daycare has 29 children and is licensed for 32. The Daycare is open for those in the community, WCC students, staff, and faculty. Student grants and Department of Social Services funds are available for parents that cannot afford the cost of childcare.
