14 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - APRIL 25. 2001 Clubs offer chance for leadership, fun International Club students dig into Chinese food following a presentation on Hong Kong that 4 club members presented as part of the regular monthly meeting. PHOTO: VOICE STAFF By LARRY PORTER The International Students’ Club was created to form friendships among students from all over the world at WCC. The members of the club help each other with communication and study problems. They also assist in the community with interpretation. At each monthly meeting members introduce their hometown and a part of their culture They also prepare and serve cuisine from their country. At the January meeting 4 students presented a program on Hong Kong; Wai Leung Lam (Henry) explained the history of Hong Kong, Pui Kwan Leung (Rony) discussed several customs and festivals, Man Yuk Chan (Natalie) explained the education system, and Kwai Chan showed many artifacts of the culture. At the February meeting Chris Lawson presented a program on Armenia, a country about the size of Maryland, located in the former Soviet Union east of Turkey. He discussed the population, history, language, religion, politics, and culture of Armenia. At the March meeting Vu Nguyen presented a presentation about Vietnam, using pictures and books. From a recent trip home, he brought everyone in the club a doll of a Vietnam lady about the size of the pinky finger. Marilou Barber is International Student Club President. Other officers include Vice President Rosy Heleine, Secretary Pui Kwan Leung, and Treasurer Virginia Davis. Adviser to the club is Fe Finch, Spanish and French instuctor. African American Males Committed to Success (AMCS) kicked off 2 meetings this semester with the topics Economic Empowerment and the Valentine Day Coed Special. Two PBL members gain state honors Phi Beta Lambda, one of the most active clubs on campus, had 2 students recognized at the state convention last month; Henri Andrews, also club president, placed 7* in Networking Concepts and was inducted into Who’s Who. Elizabeth Wilson, chapter vice president, also received the Who’s Who designation. Sabrina Kelly serves as Committee Chair. During spring semester the club has held several fundraisers to support attendance at the State Convention. Members have sold pizza and soft drinks and had bake sales. The chapter also sponsored a Tip-off which about 80 representatives from PBL chapters in the eastern region attended. ( Join a club!
