New employees swell full-time ranks to 256
Robin Smith
Robin Smith is the
administrative secretary for
the president’s division. Her
duties include working for Joy
Ginn, the personnel
coordinator, assisting her in
personnel duties,-and working
for Dr. Dan Krautheim the VP
of academic skills and Dr.
Wilson the president, doing
their secretarial work.
Smith has an AAS degree
in Business Administration
from WCC. She was
previously employed Dees,
Smith, Powell, Jarrett, Dees,
and Jones.
Smith’s hobbies include
reading, walking, shopping,
and spending time with her
family. She is married to Ben
Smith and they have two sons,
Ryan and Dylan.
Smith’s impression of
WCC is that everyone has
been friendly and helpful.
She looks forward to many
years at WCC.
David R. Hawk
David Hawk is a horticulture
instructor and coordinator of
mental health, vocational
rehab horticulture-greenhouse
technology.
Hawk is a graduate from
WCC in Turfgrass
Management. He was
previously employed with the
Department of Corrections as
a grounds supervisor for 3
years; he was Director of
Grounds Maintenance for the
town of Farmville for 6 years,
and he worked at Williams
Landscape Management for 8
years.

Hawk’s family includes his
wife, Mary Leslie, and a 3-
year-old daughter, Mattie.
His hobbies include reading,
golf, and other sports.
A unique fact about Hawk
is that he has a twin brother
who owns an Amoco
transmission business in
Smithfield.
Hawk’s impression of
WCC is that he loves it here,
and it has a great family
environment.
Steve Hill
Steve Hill works in ground
maintenance. His duties
include cutting and
manicuring the lawn and
shrubs.
Hill’s education includes 2
years at WCC in the
continuing education
program. He was previously
employed as a farmer.
Hill is a single man who is a
Christian and is involved with
youth ministries. His hobbies
and interests include watching
NASCAR and working on
lawns and ground
beautification.
“WCC is great,” said Hill.

Denece Berry
Denece P. Berry is the WIA
Coordinator. Her duties
include maintaining program
information, student files,
outreach and recruitment, case
management, and counseling
youth between 16-21 trying to
obtain a GED or an Adult
High School Diploma.
Berry has a BS from NC
A&T State University in
Business Administration. She
previously was employed at
Vance-Granville Community
College.
Berry and husband
WiUiam have a daughter,
LaShonda Berry.
Berry’s hobbies and
interests are sewing, crafts,
and exercising. “God is the
center of my life.” Berry said.
The beautiful campus
grounds of WCC are
impressive to Berry.
Jessie Battle
Jessie Battle is a housekeeper
at WCC; her job duties
include cleaning the Azalea
building.
Battle is a high school
graduate, and she has some
college credits in retail. She
was previously employed at
Seymour Johnson Air Force
Base as a sales person.
Battle’s family includes her
husband Willie, 2 adult
children and 2 grandchildren.
Her hobbies and interests
are reading, writing, and
collecting antiques. A unique
quality about her is she is a
people person, and she loves
to share good news.
“WCC is one of the best
colleges in North Carolina,”
Battle said.
Carolyn Maxine Smith
Carolyn Smith is a
housekeeper whose duties
include cleaning different
departments on campus.
Smith is a graduate of
Lumberton Senior High
School. She was previously
employed at Standard
Products.
Her family includes a son,
Darrick Lemorris McKenzie.
Smith’s hobbies include
reading books and the Bible
and writing poems. A unique
quality about her is she is a
God loving person.
“WCC is great,” Smith
said.
Jerry Penuel
Jerry Penuel, coordinator of
and instructor in the substance
abuse program coordinates
activities for the Substance
Abuse Board, teaches classes,
and coordinates co-op.
Penuel has a BS and MSW
in social work. He worked
for 5 years as clinical director
of the DART/Cherry
program-NC Department of
Corrections.
Peneul has a daughter who
works for Tommy Hilfiger
and a son who is a student at
ECU. He thinks that WCC is
“wonderful! I feel like I just
got out of prison,”
Penuel’s interests include
computers, computers, and
more computers. A unique
quality about Penuel is he is
interested in addiction and
recovery concepts and ways
to apply these concepts to life.
Barbara A. Lofton
Barbara Lofton is a preschool
teacher at the WCC Day Care
facility who coordinates a
daily program of appropriate
activities for children and
helps in assuring the welfare
and health and safety of each
child.
