20 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 1. 2002 Music juries challenge students By DANA BRADFORD While everyone dreads exams, one group of students at WCC has the “exam from hell,” otherwise known as Music Juries. According to Marshalle Lewis, part-time music instructor, the exercise prepares music students for the performance. Music juries are held the last Friday before exams start. Each student performs 3 selections from 3 different historical time frames from memory. The judges are 5 applied music instructors. The student’s grade is determined by the average of the adjudicator’s grades and the average of the lesson grades given by the applied music teacher. Applied music students have a one-hour lesson once a week with a certified instructor. The cost in the county is $250 per semester above the tuition cost. Students who have to travel outside the county have to pay $450 above the tuition cost. The applied music students are required to practice 12 hours a week during the semester, but most good students will practice more, especially around jury or concert time, Lewis said. Wayne Community College has 13 applied music students this semester according to' Steele Sasser, music instructor. Students performing on the piano are Betty Grantham and James Bynum. Voice students include Terry Toner, Cullen Jarman, Kristin Shearin, Chris Hall, and T.J. Kriston. Donald Benton will perform on the tuba. Percussion students are Kevin Palaganas and Tim Heath.
