12 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - DECEMRRR 11. 2002 Monument Ceremony honors those who have served By JO ANN C. KING On September 8, 2002, at 4:00 p.m., in WCC’s Moffatt Auditorium, approximately 375 people gathered to honor fallen heroes of local fire departments, rescue and EMS units, police departments and the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The program began with the presentation of flags by the Honor Guard of Wayne County’s Sheriff Department and a pledge of allegiance to the flags that Cierra Harris, daughter of Keith Harris, who spearheaded the service, led. Harris also initiated the movement to erect a monument on WCC’s north campus. The monument is dedicated to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Debbie Harris, President of the Wayne County Rescue Association, served as Mistress of Ceremony. Reverend Pete Williams, Chaplain, Wayne County Sheriffs Department led the invocation. WCC’s President, Dr. Edward H. Wilson, Jr., welcomed the guests, and Bolely Greenfield, Chief, Goldsboro Fire Department, introduced the dignitaries. A plaque in recognition of having spearheaded the memorial service was presented to Keith Harris. The Monument honors the following: Sheriff John Coor-Pender, Highway Patrolman I. T. Moore, Officer Herbert C. Wiegand, Lt. C. Frank Faircloth, Officer Mahlon M. Parks, and EMT James Madison Hickman. f. mm t ^ mu! i’o The monument, located on the north side of campus ne^ to the Veterans' Monument, is made of black granite.
