16 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - DECEMBER 11. 2002 Student parents share tips, concerns By TRUDI THOMAS, BRANDY ZERKLE and LISA M. LEE Being a full-time student is a huge feat in itself. Some students carry the extra burden of being fiill-time parents as well. For them time management becomes a necessary tool for success. Some student/parents have some ideas on managing college and kids. Shaunita Ezzell, WCC student in the Early Childhood Associate program, said about her 10- month-old son, "He requires lots of attention, so when he is awake I try to keep my attention just on him, and when he takes his naps I get ‘ my homework done." Ezzell added, "It is hard being a parent and a student, but I know it will pay off in the future." Lisa Barnes, WCC college student, has 3 children. She said, "I pull out my books and do my homework before the children get home and after they go to bed.” "One of the reasons is that I do not want the children to see me stressed and the other is that I promised myself that going b^k to school would not interBre with my duties as a parent." Loretta Washburn, WCC college transfer student and wife and mother, said, "Time is a commodity that I can not afford to nor wish to waste. I utilize a centralized location at home to post a calendar used to keep up with everyone’s daily schedules and appointments." Many student/parents said they do their homework in a group setting with their children to model good study habits. Sharon Warren said, “I come to school everyday, even if I don’t have a class scheduled. I go to the library and use the extra time to study. When I am at home my family takes up my time, so I aim to get all my school work done at school.” Articulation T>ay called *sMccessfuV By LISA M. LEE and ANNIE HUDSON October 22, 2002, marked the first Articulation Day at WCC. On this date approximately 500 staff, faculty, and flF counselors from WCC and Wayne County High Schools met on campus to discuss some agreements for the new school year. The meeting was an opportunity for faculty members to get to know each other, to understand their respective educational programs better, and to understand how they fit together. It was also an opportunity for both groups to learn of resources available for instructional use at WCC and high schools including equipment, supplies, lectures, tours, and facilities. WCC staff informed the high school faculty about how to prepare students to attend WCC and other state continued page 17 ^ ' ,.y j": Shaunita Ezzell Loretta Washburn Lisa Barnes w Sharon Warren DRLV HOMES (8mmodore ^ ijomes 4112 us 70 East Goldsboro, NC 27534 “Homes worth looking into" (919) 778-5174 James Daly Fax (919) 778-7276 OWNER (919) 778-7224 % Uniforms Galore BARNYARD SHOPPING CENTER 2203 E.
